Special to Mid Valley Times
The Sanger Apaches’ cross country team had a record setting day at the 41st Annual Sanger Invita- tional at Avocado Lake.
The invitational fea- tured 38 teams from across the central valley and a few from the central coast.
The running Apaches came home with four first place team champion fin- ishes, along with three in- dividual titles and a bunch of lifetime bests.
The Varsity Girls fea- tured a tight competition scoring the top two teams within five points, but the Apaches came out on top over Monache, taking home the first Sanger In- vite Varsity girls team ti- tle for Sanger High School since 1984.
The girls were led by Nia Lamas running an- other school record time of 17:44 (Lowering her old school record by 41 sec- onds). Her time is also the third fastest time ever run on this course by any girl in 41 years. Nia was fol- lowed closely by Rebecca Coronado, Sienna Bianchi, Jessica Recinos, Jahari Garcia and Anayacsi Diaz. Their team time is also a school record for Sanger High School.
The Varsity Boys, not wanting to be outdone, stepped up big at their home invite. They made

have been very valuable in terms of the team learning from mistakes and players understanding their roles. As seasons change some- times roles do too. The hope is that these games prepare us for league play and help us develop an identity. We’ve had our share of learning and teaching opportunities so far and we hope they have made us a better team moving forward.”

the race “not so close” of a competition running four guys in the top 10 overall with a fifth not too far be- hind.
The boys took home the first-place team prize in convincing fashion scor- ing 42 points ahead of Ar- royo Grande (2nd with 80 points). David DeLoera, only a 10th grader, astound- ed the crowd by taking 1st place overall in 15:48 for the 3-mile course.
David makes himself the first Sanger Invitational champion for Sanger High school since 1993 (Pamenos Ballantyne). He was close- ly followed by Emanuel Sa- las, Jayden Olea, Benjamin Awad, Juan Zamora, Myles Nicasio and Anthony Gon- zalez. The boys team win is the first Sanger Invite var- sity boys title since 1993.
The JV Boys finished up the day strong for Sanger placing 2nd as a team led by Jaden Terrones (only a 10th grader) 1st place finish in the race running 16:58 for 3 miles. The boys top 5 all finished in the top 25 to pick up individual medals.
The entire team com- pleted the day with four first place team plaques, three first place individual titles, 14 boys medals (top 25) and 12 girls medals (top 25).
The Apaches will con- tinue the season with a JV competition at Woodward Park this Friday and a Var- sity competition in Atas- cadero on Saturday.
High School Athletic Hall of Fame Ron Blackwood has noted that a couple of this year’s Apaches have made it onto the top 10 list for all time longest runs from scrimmage.
Morgan Privett ran 88 yards against Hanford and 81 yards against Reedley and Kosi Agina scampered 84 yards against Reedley.
Agina also has a run last year, 81 yards against SJM in the top 10.
The longest run from scrimmage by an Apache, according to Blackwood, was 99 yards by Kay Nishamura in 1960 against Selma.

MVT Staff Report
The Orosi Cardinals did all their work in the first half in Friday night’s matchup against Avenal. In the third of a four-game home stretch at the new George Mill- horn Stadium, the Cardi- nals exploited the Bucca- neer’s defense to put up 37 points in the first half and walk away with a 37- 0 victory.
Orosi began the game as they often do, by tak- ing their opening drive to the end zone. Scoring the Cardinal’s first touch- down was Orosi High’s lead runner Dominic Martinez. The junior tail- back ran it in from one- yard out to help give his team a 7-0 lead with just about three minutes off the clock.
The Cardinals scored the majority of their points in the second quar- ter. After Orosi’s defense scored a safety to begin the second quarter, the Cardinal’s offense put together a drive that ended with junior quar- terback Evan Lara con- necting with Orosi High’s Andrew Arechiga for a 39-yard touchdown pass.
Lara later hit Arech- iga again on a 50-yard touchdown pass to give the Cardinals a 23-0 lead
with about four minutes left in the half. Orosi’s quarterback threw his third touchdown of the quarter, and game, with under a minute to go in the half, finding junior wide receiver Aidan Ro- driguez for a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Orosi then recovered an Avenal fumble deep in Buccaneer territory, and Martinez was able to close out the half with a 6-yard touchdown rush, his second of the game and the Cardinal’s fifth.
Tomorrow night, Orosi high will face off with yet another top small-school contender in Caruthers. The Blue Raiders come into the game with a 4-1 record and a four-game winning streak. They are also coming off a 12-1 record last year and a season that ended only with a loss to Kennedy High in the CIF Division 5 semi- finals game.
The year prior, Ca- ruthers made it all the way to the CIF Division 6AA championship game, but lost to Orange High by three points, 46-43.
Tomorrow night’s game will be held at the new George Millhorn Stadium and is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
