The Reedley High Pirates and Sanger High Apaches' quest for a Northern Cali- fornia Division I boys soccer championship ended in the semifinal and quarterfinal rounds, respectively, in last week's playoffs.
The Central Section cham- pion Pirates (20-7-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on top-seeded (and eventual champion) Whit- ney High of Rocklin on March 3, but the Wildcats (21-2-2) ral- lied to tie the match by half- time and went on to a 4-2 semi- final victory. Whitney then clinched the NorCal champion- ship with a 3-1 home win over No. 2 seed Watsonville.

Reedley High's Jose Magallon (9) dribbled between a pair of Branham High defenders during the Pirates' 2-0 NorCal quarterfinal victory on March 1. Division I section champion Reedley (20-7-3) reached the Nor- Cal semifinals before losing 4-2 in the semifinals at eventual champion Whitney High of Rocklin.
Against Whitney, Reedley's strong start was powered by goals from Adam Sanchez and Alex Perez. But the hosts took charge in the second half and were led by two goals from senior Robbie Mora-Arias.
Sanger and De La Salle (which finished 20-7-1) battled to a 3-3 deadlock after regula- tion time in their quarterfinal battle. The Apaches held 2-0 and 3-1 leads but had to play a player down the rest of the way after a red card penalty.
In the 15-minute "golden goal" (sudden death) overtime, Tony Torres scored his second goal on a header shot to end the Apaches' season.
The game was marred by alleged racial and ethnic taunts by De La Salle parents and students, specifically tar- geting Latino players for the Apaches.
The incident was being in- vestigated by both schools and the California Interscholastic Federation. Another incident occurred at Buchanan High's giorls soccer playoff at Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills.

Central Sequoia League cham- pion Dinuba High placed two players — including Defensive Player of the Year Jesus Lara – on the all-league boys basketball first team while Immanuel High had one first team selection in re- cent voting by league coaches.
In addition, Dinuba's Jeff Schofield was voted as Coach of the Year after guiding the Emper- ors to a 26-4 season and outright CSL crown.
Joining Lara for DHS on the first team was fellow senior Ke- ine Prendez, who led the Emps in scoring with 12 points per game while averaging two steals and two assists. Lara averaged 6.6 as- sists and six rebounds per game while helping anchor the team's pressure defense down low.
Dinuba also had two second team selections in senior Isaiah Martinez (10.8 ppt, 7.1 rebounds,

3.1 assists) and junior Anthony Harp (9 ppg, 2.5 assists).
The Emperors set a school re- cord for victories in 2021-22, cap-
turing their own Dinuba Tourna- ment championship and reaching the finals of the prestigious Polly Wilhelmsen Invitational in Visalia before dropping a tight decision to eventual Division II section champion Mt. Whitney.
Immanuel High senior Ryan Chavez also was voted to the first team, averaging about 20 points (including a career high 39 points in a Jan. 18 win over Central Val- ley Christian) and 5.5 rebounds per game while helping lead the team to a 15-13 record. Sopho- more Mikah Tolpezninkas (12.7 ppg) earned second team honors.
The Eagles finished in a fourth place tie in league, with the high- light a home win over second place Kingsburg in the second round of league play.
Kingsburg's Matthew Rueg- ge was voted CSL Most Valu- able Player, averaging 21 points

The Immanuel High girls' unexpected bas- ketball postseason run finally ended in the Northern California Di- vision V regional quar- terfinals last week.
The Eagles — who won three straight games to reach the Central Section title game and earn an at- large bid — lost by a 56-29 score to Mt. Dia- blo High of Concord on March 1 to finish a 12- 21 season. Immanuel entered the postseason at 19-9, but then got hot with three road wins starting with an upset
of No. 3 seed Reedley. "It was a great ex- perience, it all started with playing Reed- ley High and we just rolled on it," coach Joe
Vasquez said.

on Feb. 25, lost by a 4-3 score in overtime to No. 3 seed De La Salle Concord on March 1. The No. 6 seed Apaches — NorCal Division II champs in 2020 — finished the campaign at 21-4-1.
Reedley entered the Nor-
Cal playoffs as the No. 4 seed, and reached the semifinal round with a 2-0 shutout of No. 5 seed Branham High from San Jose on March 1. A capacity crowd packed the home side of the new Reedley High Soccer Complex, and
the home fans were treated to goals from Levy Alcantar and Cruz Ledesma.
Both players also added assists, while goalie Angel Le- mus and RHS teammate put the clamps defensively to the visitors.
