Two annual region events underwent drastic changes because of COVID-19. ABOVE: The annual Reed- ley Fiesta on Oct. 12-13 became virual events, with the parade on Oct. 13 becoming a "reverse parade" where vehicles traveled along G Street to view the parade floats and exhibits. LEFT: The annual Dinuba Holiday Christmas Parade on Dec. 5 also bcame a "reverse parade" event. The pandemic forced the cancellation of Sanger's annual Veterans and Toyland holiday parades for 2020.

initial court ruling allowing it to remain open, and after another in- junction resulted in fines against the district the two sides came to a settlement allowing the schools to continue on-campus learning regardless of the county's purple tier status.
The city's public school district, Kings Canyon Unified (including Orange Cove schools), went to distance learning as soon as dis- tricts throughout the state began shutting down to live instruction in March. After completing the 2019-2020 school year with a vir- tual graduation ceremony record- ed individually among families, the district began the 2020-2021 school year with distance learn- ing. St. La Salle Catholic School was the first in the region to re- ceive a waiver from the county,
and began their on-campus learn- ing in late September.
Reedley College also went to general online instruction for the vast majority of its enrolled students, with a rare lab taking place on campus. Students gen- erally have remained off campus this fall, and a virtual graduation ceremony was held in late May. Earlier this month, the college's first Flight Science class of future pilots conducted a delayed gradu- ation ceremony.
In city government, the Reedley Council added a new member as Matthew Tuttle defeated Ken Bak- er in the Nov. 3 election to succeed outgoing Mayor Frank Pinon on the council. Incumbent members Bob Beck and Anita Betancourt also were re-elected after running un- opposed, while longtime member Mary Fast took the gavel earlier this month for her third stint as mayor.

positive COVID cases makes it unlikely that the desired start date of Jan. 11 will be reached. The district will deter- mine an alternate date if the county remains in the purple tier.
Sanger Unified's schedule to resume class for the winter- spring quarters starts on Monday, Jan. 11. Cut- ler-Orosi Joint Unified has postponed starting in-person instruction at the district's elementary schools, and will begin the new winter-spring distance learning por- tion of the school year on Jan. 11.
