SANGER HERALD 5A THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2018
HALL OF FAME: The three coaches to be inducted are Sanger High legends: Roy Tanimoto, Chuck Shidan and Dave Dodson. Continued from page 1A
Roy Tanimoto
stadium was named after him. He is presi- dent of the Central Section Track and Field Committee and is in charge of nine central section master’s meets.
Chuck Shidan, who coached football for more years than any other Apache football coach, from 1990 to 2016, also holds the re- cord for the most wins in Apache history, 203. That’s in the top 10 in the entire CIF Central Section. His 2016 team won 13 games in a row, another school record.
Versatile Roy Tanimoto coached girls basketball for 18 years and football for four years. When he retired as basketball coach in ’93 after winning two division championships, his 292 wins were on the top 10 list in the section. His ’82 football team was a league champion, making him only the third coach in Sanger sports history to win a champion- ship in football and basketball.
Willie Garcia got a full ride scholarship to USC to play quarterback when he graduated from Sanger High in 1958. But an injury cut his career short. As an Apache quarterback he led his ’56 team to a Valley championship in Sanger’s new stadium, defeating Corcoran 40-6. He’s already in the Sanger basketball hall of fame and in baseball he was on the Apaches last Sequoia Division Valley champi- onship team in 1955.
Cole Herron was a two-time section and state champion high jumper. He still holds the all time meet record of 7 feet. As an Apache basketball player he’s the No. 11 career scorer with 798 points, the No. 9 all time one season scorer with 427 points and No. 2 single game rebounder with 22. He was considered for induction with the earlier class, but the Naval Academy graduate was on deployment and couldn’t attend the induc- tion ceremony.
Chuck Shidan
Ted Torosian, a three-sport athlete at Sanger High, graduated in 1977. He was on the ’76 Apache football team that won the large school valley championship. He later played football at Fresno State and with the Oakland Invaders.
Chris Wallin, a 1990 Sanger High grad, was district water polo player of the year
in ’90 and later became an All American at Stanford, where in his senior year he led the team to the NCAA Division 1 championship.
Cindy Weibert, a 1989 Apache graduate, played volleyball, basketball and softball in high school. She was on coach Roy Tanimoto’s ’87-’88 Valley championship basketball team. She still holds the single season record for most assists, 155, and is No. 4 all time with career assists, 328. As a softball player she pitched seven no-hitters. In one 10 inning game she struck out 21 batters and she holds the record for the most strikeouts in a career, 473.
Nomination forms for future inductees are available at the high school athletic office, from a high school Athletic Club Booster member and at the Sanger Herald.
Creating the Hall of Fame has been a col- laborative effort between Sanger Unified and the Sanger Historical Society.
The Historical Society and the school dis- trict are using the old Harding brick school- house building just south of the Sanger Depot Museum, to house Hall of Fame memorabilia. The Historical Society owns the building and together with the school district is using a portion of it to display information about Hall of Fame inductees.
The Historical Society and the Hall of Fame Committee are asking for help with fundraising to continue to renovate the old schoolhouse, said Historical Society president
Dave Dodson
Ken Marcantonio.
If you would like to donate or help with a
fundraiser call the Depot Museum which is operated by the Historical Society at (559) 875-4720.
The Hall of Fame Committee is also asking for silent auction donations for the induction dinner and ceremony. "Sports related dona- tions would be especially appreciated," said Penner.
Let Penner know if you’d like to place
an ad in the commemorative program to be given to inductees and banquet attendees and put on permanent display with other hall of fame memorabilia.
The first class to be inducted in May of this year was made up of Tom Flores, Pete Beiden, JR Boone, Huntley Dayton, Dean Nicholson, Lynette Wilke, Atomic Torosian, Brent Webber, Clare Slaughter, Brian Wallin, Lou Papac, Rene Schneider, Bill Powell, Nick Katzemayer, David Naranjo, Bill Herron, Jim Merlo, Gene Green, Herman Cooks and Bruce Barnes.
