Homero Fortenay
Homero F. Fortaney of Sanger died Jan. 27. He was 69.
Mr. Fortaney worked as an assembly line worker for Gen- eral Motors Corp. He is survived by his wife Agustina L. Fortaney of Sanger, three sons, three daughters, five brothers, eight sisters, 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A rosary and funeral mass was held Jan. 30 at the old St. Mary’s Catho- lic Church in Sanger.

Kovacevich
Margaret Mary Ko- vacevich of Reedley died Jan. 21. She was 93.
Mrs. Kovacevich was a homemaker. She is survived by her hus- band John Joseph Ko- vacevich, one son, two daughters, one brother and two sisters.

Sanger Unified schools receive
grants for educations projects
Private services were held.
Del Rey Elemen- tary will use the funds to help bring families together for a common goal through legos. The school’s ‘Knights are Family’ project in- volves students work- ing together with family members to construct items using legos.

at Del Rey Elementary, said the activities have shown to give the 260 students who participate in it a better chance of overall success in school.
The third grant, awarded to Wilson El- ementary School, will go towards a science work- shop for 140 students. The project uses SAM
Academy staff to help students develop age ap- propriate skills using a wide range of materials and tools to help build STEM (Science, Technol- ogy, Engineering, Math- ematics) concepts.
The school sites were awarded their grants at the Jan. 14 school board meeting for SUSD.
Amelia Lopez
Amelia Lopez of Sanger died Jan. 30. She was 79.
Mrs. Lopez worked in data entry. She is sur- vived by one son, three daughters and 11 grand- children.
A rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. followed byamassat10a.m.on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the old St. Mary's Cath- olic Church on O Street in Sanger. Burial will be in Sanger Cemetery.

Three schools from the Sanger Unified School District were re- cently awarded grants in the amount of $2,000 for projects to help en- hance learning. The schools, Sanger Acad- emy, Del Rey Elemen- tary and Wilson Elemen- tary, received the funds through the Foundation for Sanger Schools.
The foundation raises money throughout the school year in order to help assist Sanger Uni- fied schools with learn- ing projects through its ‘Excellence in Educa- tion’ grants.
Sanger Academy re- ceived the grant to help with the school’s ‘Cut Your Demo in The Bears’ Studio’ project, which al- lows students to record their musical perfor- mances. The recordings are then shared through the school’s ‘Pawcast’ YouTube channel.
The recording proj- ect will serve about 630 students.
Renae Polkownikow Renae Elizabeth
Polkownikow of Sanger died Feb. 1. She was 21. She is survived by her parents Leon and Laurie Polkownikow of Sanger, one sister and
one grandfather. Visitation will be
held on Monday, Feb. 10, at Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Sanger Cem- etery at noon.
Monte E. Shebelut of Reedley died Jan. 29. He was 93.
Mr. Shebelut worked as a farmer. He is sur- vived by his wife Su- sana Shebelut, one daughter, one son and six grandchildren.
Visitation was held Feb. 5 at Dopkins Fu- neral Chapel. A grave- side service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba.

More restrictive decoration policy in effect at Smith Mountain Cemetery

Smith Mountain Cem- etery recently updated its Decoration Policy that became effective on Jan. 28.
The cemetery is gov- erned by the Alta Cem- etery District and is governed by a Board of Trustees that has statu- tory authority to exer- cise all rights and pow- ers to own, operate, im- prove and maintain the cemetery.
Alta Cemetery Dis- trict manager Robin Ogata said the rules were approved on Jan. 13.
“There was not a whole lot changed, but we have to enforce them,” she said.
Some of those rules under the policy include: • No more than a total of 3 approved, unbreak- able vases/flower con- tainers allowed within each marker, which in- cludes the vases that become flush with the marker when not in use and an unbreakable con-
tainer with a maximum diameter of 8 inches
• Fences, structures, glass objects (including jars, vases, bottles or containers), decorative marbles, rocks, food or any other unauthorized items are prohibited
• Flowers, fresh or silk, and all other deco- rations must be placed in the vases/container within the marker. Flags and solar lights 24 inch- es or less may be placed within the vases/contain- er. Flags and solar lights must not have pointed tops or ends. Plastic, battery operated prayer candles may be placed with the vases/unbreak- able container. Items may not be staked or secured to the ground. Mylar balloons, glass, ceramic or metal deco-
