New beginning new garden at Dinuba Senior Center By Rick Curiel Mid Valley Publishing
A garden is blooming at the Dinuba Senior Center and se- niors are flourishing in in in the pro- cess One senior Isabel Nerio who has been involved in in in in the the project since its inception says the the the new garden not only gives the the elderly something new to do it also stirs up happy memories “I haven’t seen anything like this since my dad passed away ” said Nerio “He used to to to plant a a a a a a a a a a little garden of tomatoes squash and stuff He’s been gone for about 11 years now ” With a a a a a a smile Nerio added “This was really down
my alley It’s beautiful ” The garden at the senior cen- ter ter has been a a a a a a two-year project in in the the the making After the the the city of Di- nuba took over
the the the center about two years ago Cecilia Bobst was brought in to oversee the newly acquired facility Bobst has over
20 years of experience working in in in various capacities for the city of Dinuba but admittedly had little experi- ence in in in senior living before tak- ing ing her new position as director for the Senior Center “When I came everybody kind of of had ideas of of different things we can do ” said Bobst “It was our City Manager (Luis Patlan) who actually suggested the senior garden ” Bobst then turned to to the the the community to to to make the the the vision a a a a a a a a reality Soon she was able to to secure a a a a a a a a a $1 000 grant from Wal- Mart She also received contribu- tions from Dinuba Lumber who Bobst said was very helpful in in in providing much of the the material needed for the the the garden Donations from the the Dinuba Lions Club Club and Kiwanis Club Club pushed the garden’s budget to nearly $2 000 But in order for for the garden to be truly functional for for seniors the the garden would need raised beds For that Bobst turned to the the wood shop class at at Dinuba High School Three students from Mr Bill Olinger’s class Jesus Diaz Ruben Lopez and Chris Sauce- do spent their extra time after school building the the large raised flower beds which stand 4

feet feet feet wide and and about three- feet feet high “These students did a a a great job ” said Bobst The garden has been on on loca- tion for about a a a a a a a a a a month and was recently planted with a a a a a a a a a a variety of fruits and vegetables There are cucumbers squash strawber- ries bell peppers jalapenos and an an entire box devoted to to to a a a a a a a a a wide array of tomatoes There are also raised flowerbeds devoted to succulents Seniors from from the the center have had a a a a a a hand in in in the the the garden from from the the beginning Members such as Nerio Irene Sandoval Betty Ann Isabel Nerio left and Betty Ann Gomez right water the the new vegetable garden at at the the Dinuba Senior Center MILT’S
