caution along all riverbanks. Flows are expected to be well within channel capacities, Haugen added.
Meadows said the flood release is likely to last a minimum of three to four weeks, with the potential to last into the summer. The duration of the release, he said, will depend on future weather conditions and the release will continue to be adjusted accordingly to meet irrigation orders and changing conditions.
As of last Wednesday, Mar. 6, the Kings River Water Association reported that Pine Flat Reservoir was at about 64 percent of capacity, with 638,978 acre- feet. The reservoir has a storage capacity of 1 million acre-feet.
On Thursday, Mar. 7, KRWA estimated 8,925 cubic feet per second of full natural flow (as if there were no dams) at Piedra, three miles down from Pine Flat Dam. The total, the association said, included about 675 cubic feet per second from Mill and Hughes creeks, which both flow into the Kings River below Pine Flat Dam.
The flow at Reedley Narrows, approximately three miles upstream from Reedley, was estimated at 250 cubic feet per second.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assumes all primary Kings River water management decisions from the Kings River Water Association during a flood release. The Corps oversees the San Joaquin Valley's overall flood management. The KRWA administers the Kings River's water entitlements, storage, deliveries and agreements for 28 member agencies that serve one million acres in Fresno, Kings and Tulare counties.
