Shaver Lake Open draws a crowd

Engineering a multi-day event at a re- mote location involving 800 participants and 48 teams from across the West Coast wasn’t easy.
And adding to the complexity was the detail that it takes place in the water with- out established facilities. No dock. Very few real roads. Nothing but imagination and a pleasant sandy beach.
“You don’t even know,” said Hillary Boos, one of the organizers on the first day. “There are teams from San Diego, from Se- attle. All over the place.”
But the event, the Shaver Lake Open Water Polo Tournament, is a mainstay of host Rebel Water Polo Club. And volunteers do everything, from regulating traffic to
setting up temporary campgrounds and getting the porta potty truck in regularly to keep the facilities clean and civilized.
The Shaver Lake Open even had to switch locations on relatively short notice — from Camp Edison to the eastern shore of Shaver. The new location proved to be more off the beaten track, requiring spec- tators to head further north on Highway 168 and along an access road that started at Sierra Marina.
Boos said the unique requirements and logistics of such an undertaking require starting preparations a year in advance. So planning next year’s tournament was to start soon after competition concluded July 14. Play began July 12 at 8 a.m.
“A bit of a trek back here,” she said just above the shore in a preferred park-
ing area surrounded by massive trees. “It’s been a little challenging just because we’re at a new location. We came in to do tractor work about a month ago. Then we came in on Wednesday (July 10) getting water down (on the temporary roads to prevent dust).
“We’ve been working nonstop.”
And the water polo players, their fans and everybody else appeared to be having a great time. Volunteers driving all-terrain vehicles ferried people from one stop to an- other. And they did it quickly. Without fuss.
Even the Fresno County Sheriff parked a patrol boat in the lake nearby to keep other watercraft from creating wakes that could disrupt the games.
