Homecoming honors for Sanger High's Chuck Shidan
By Rick Curiel
Mid Valley Times
Longtime Sanger High football coach Chuck Shidan is now part of the Sanger High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He was the guest of honor at a recep- tion held prior to the Apaches' Homecoming game on Oct. 18. The re- ception was held at the park near the red brick building in Sanger’s civ- ic center, with a handful of boosters and support- ers there to congratulate and thank Shidan for all he’s done to build up the school’s football pro- gram.
On hand to congratu- late Shidan was Sanger City Mayor Frank Gon- zalez.
“First year inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Gonzalez. “Now you’re the grand mar- shal. What’s next? May- be Mayor?”
Shidan, in his accep- tance speech, shared how impressed he was with the Hall of Fame, located inside the red brick building.
“It’s just amazing to see all the great ath- letes,” said Shidan. “And

Chuck Shidan addressed the audience during a reception in Sanger's civic center on Oct. 18. At the reception, the former longtime Sanger High School football coach was the guest of honor in recognition of him serving as the grand marshal for the school's annual Homecoming Parade.
I know the Hall of Fame is going to keep grow- ing and growing because Sanger is so rich in tra- dition. Tonight is home- coming and it’s going to be such an exciting night. Tom Flores Sta- dium is the best place to be at.”
Shidan couldn’t stay too long, as his son was simultaneously playing on Sanger’s Junior Var- sity squad.
Shidan went to school in Sanger and gradu- ated from Sanger High
School. After going off to college at San Fran- cisco State University he spent some time coach- ing at Roosevelt High School and El Camino High School in South San Francisco. He then returned home to coach the Apaches, where he was the head coach for 28 years before retiring after the 2016 season.
“I had to come home,” added Shidan.
All together, Shidan coached for 36 years.
“It’s really special.
I’m really honored,” he said. “I think it’s re- ally exciting. I had fun coaching here.”
Shidan served as the grand marshal for Sanger High’s Home- coming parade on Fri- day night. He also was the guest of honor at midfield prior to the Apache’s game against Madera South — tossing the coin.
He also returned to the sideline and cheered the Apaches on to a 42-0 victory.
