I asked Garza, who
worked a total of 27 years for the district, why he wanted to be at the groundbreaking for the high-achieving char- ter school. It opened in 2012 in rooms at Reedley College.
“It’s special,” Garza said, noting it was a vision that started more than six years ago with then RC President Mitjl Capet and then interim President Michael White.
“It was all about opportu- nities for kids, and it follows our mission statement for Kings Canyon Unified – pro- grams and opportunities.”
I asked him if he wants to see the school when it’s completed in about a year. “I hope so. I hope I’m invited,” he said.
Since his departure, Garza has been busy spend-
tend classes Tuesday or Thursday. The Tuesday classes begin March 20; the Thursday sessions start March 11. Register now at www.reedley.com or in person at the com- munity center. For more details, call (559) 637- 4203.

“I want to continue con- tributing to education for as long as I can and balance it with my grandkids and fam- ily,” he said.
When we last talked be- fore he left in June, Garza said leaving was harder than he thought it would be. But he also said he was ready.
