The Apaches have fielded a hard-working team this year, and at least two of them plan to make it all the way to state. Below, Vincent Stafford pins Edison's A. Phagnosay.

Rodriguez’s intent was to get his opponent in a bulldog, a move defined as a move in which the wrestler grabs an opponent’s head and lunges forward so the wrestler lands on the mat. Rodriguez succeeded and got his opponent on his back.
Hernandez said he “bulks up” in the off- season, meaning he builds muscle mass and strength. Then during the season, he drops the weight and works on his moves, speed and power on the mat.
He did admit to thinking about certain foods. He said the night before the

match he went home to a plain chicken breast and ice water. “There are some foods you get a craving for,” he said. “For me, it’s tacos and pizza.”
After the dual meet, Hernandez said he planned to eat dinner. “Meatball

coach Smith said his girls knew they had to prepare for the match. And they did. “How badly does Sanger want us?” he asked. “We had to match that intensity. We had to play to that level.”
Sanger wanted a different outcome. But the rivalry inspired the Lady Coyotes.
“Tonight they played their butts off,” Smith said of his team. “It’s the most complete game they played all year.”
Smith said his team has had good performances, reaching their potential maybe two, maybe three quarters a game. But this time, he said they put it out there all four quarters. And didn’t let up.
“Both teams hustled,” Smith said. “We knew it was going to be a scrappy game. We’re growing up.”
Campbell said after the Sunnyside game that his Apaches are still young and
still learning but hardly stagnant. “We play so hard on defense,” he said. “We forget to slow down on offense.”
Sanger master statistician Ron Blackwood, who has had son Patrick collecting stats while he’s on the mend, put it this way in his game notes: “The problem — Sanger was called for 27 fouls to the Coyotes’ 17.”
Senior Alina Vazquez, who hit two threes against Sunnyside, said the game against the Wildcats had just been practice. “We’re just trying to get ready,” she said after that game, referring to the match against the Coyotes. “Our team is getting more confident.”
Mata said she expected high intensity from Madera. “It was hard core,” she said after the Madera game. “I think we can beat them next time. Our emotions took over (in this game). We’re going to beat them next time.”
Vazquez agreed. “We’re ready to get them at their house and do to them what
they did to us,” she said. “We’re hungry.”
Senior Maryann Jaramillo nodded. “Next time,” she said. “We’re getting closer every time.”
And Adrian Vazquez, Alina’s dad, said, “That was a good game. We should’ve won.”
Two key members from the 2015 team made the game, Alina’s sister Desirae, who plays for Fresno City, and Alexandrea “Bug” Ambriz, who coaches the Wilson Bulldogs.
Leading Madera in scoring were seniors Alyssa Fernandez with 12 and Janessa Fernandes with 11.
Roth had seven points for Sanger, and senior Stephanie Herring had six, coupled with nine rebounds. Kulow also had five steals.
