Arthur rudolf lAemmlen
September 20, 1930 - November 18, 2019
Arthur Rudolf Laemmlen was born to Rudolf and Elsa Laemmlen on September 20, 1930 in Fresno, California, and he returned to his Heavenly Father on November 18, 2019. He was the rst son in a family of 5 children; three brothers who are still living, Henry, Wilfred, and Franklin and a sister, Ruth, a twin to Wilfred who died at 16 months. As a young boy, Art and his brothers attended Windsor School. It was challenging at rst as they only spoke German in their home. He graduated at the top of his 8th grade class. In 1948 he graduated from Reedley High School. There he was on the championship basketball team, active in sports clubs, academic clubs, forensics, and was the commissioner of awards for the school. He was the only boy in the graduating class of 149 students to have grades good enough to be honored for seven semesters in the California Scholarship Federation.
After high school he went to UC Davis, where he studied Agricultural Economics with a plant science minor. He graduated from there in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree, which included a one year residency at UC Berkeley. He was on the diving team and enjoyed being a member of an academic fraternity.
It was at Davis that he met his future wife, Grace Smuin. Following graduation he entered the voluntary service program of the Mennonite Central Committee where he served as a unit leader for conscientious objectors in Pueblo Colorado and then as a hospital administrator at Brook Lane Farm in Hagerstown, Maryland.
On their return to Reedley they bought the farm next to his parents homestead and Art began his life time dream of being a farmer. He scraped, leveled and cleared in order to prepare it for irrigation and future crops. The early farm had alfalfa, cotton, corn, oranges and then in time, vineyards and orchards, and nally just orchards. Art continued to live on this farm until his death. He loved it there. On this farm, Art and Grace raised three children: Paul (Leslie), Ann (John), and Eric (Sharon).
Art was involved in many community and civic affairs, including Toastmaster’s International, six years as PTA president, a member of Community Chest, Reedley College Advisory Counsel, Reedley Community Farmer of the Year in 1979, and he served as the Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Reedley Ward from 1978-1983, and was a member of the Sequoia Woodturners club.
In 1988 Art and Grace divorced. Grace has subsequently died. In 1988 he married Kristine Simonsen Ankrum. Kristine brought four sons, Aubrey, Kendal, Trevor, and Parker to the relationship which Art raised as his own.
In later years he loved being in his shop making toys for the grandchildren, turning bowls and vases on his lathe, and repairing broken items while listening to classical music. He worked in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple two days a week for many years. He was a great example to many and will be missed.
He leaves his wife, Kristine and the children of their two marriages, 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Services were held November 23, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints in Selma, California with internment in the Reedley Cemetery.
Melvin Carl Harrel
May 20, 1921 ~ October 25, 2019
Melvin Harrel, of Reedley is the beloved Father, Husband, Pastor and Friend to many. The Lord called him home October 25th and he is now at peace and reunited with his wife Millie, his daughter Claudia, his grandson Steffen, his parents, his four brothers and many other family and friends.
Melvin was born in Ioland, Oklahoma to Ray and Emma Harrel. He is survived by his son James, his wife Valerie and his sister Betty Lou. There are also a grand collection of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends!
Melvin gave his heart to the Lord and was called into the ministry at age 16. He later met Millie when he was invited to become the associate Pastor at Faith Tabernacle in Oklahoma City. Mel and Millie were married there June 20, 1946 and were joined not only by their wedding vows, but also by the Evangelistic Ministry. Mel and Millie served churches in San Bernardino, Ghana Africa, Fresno, Grass Valley, Reno, Oklahoma City, Kingsburg and Reedley.
In 1985, Mel & Millie returned to Reedley to become pastors of Full Gospel Tabernacle and made Reedley their home. They again started the Youth Ranch for kids and the Carpenter Shop downtown which was a teen outreach center.
His Place Carpenter Shop Ministries was registered as a Non-Pro t organization in 2002 and is still going strong today due to the amazing and generous support of people across the nation and around the world!
Melvin was an amazing man with a big heart, always willing to reach out and help those less fortunate or in need. God blessed Mel with a long life and he always said, “When my work here is done, God will come for me and when I get to heaven, I know God will have more work for me to do.”
Please join us to celebrate Melvin’s life on December 7th at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Reedley at 1:00pm. Lunch will be served after the service.
In lieu of owers, Melvin requested donations be made to
