Staff Report
An Oakhurst man was killed and two other men were injured Aug. 5 when the vehicle they were riding in was broadsided at the intersec- tion of Highway 180 and Frankwood Avenue north of Reedley.
A California Highway Patrol news release said Kenneth Hockersmith, 66, was fatally in- jured when the 1999 Jeep he was driving west on Highway 180 was struck about 1 p.m. by a 2000 Toyota driven by 18-year-old Clara More- no Lemus of Lindsay.
According to the CHP, Lemus was driving north on Frankwood and had stopped at the in- tersection, but then drove into the intersection in an attempt to cross the highway and hit the vehicle on the driver’s side door.
The impact of the crash sent the Jeep onto the north dirt shoulder of the highway and caused it to overturn. Two passengers in the Jeep, 62-year-old Don Hockersmith of Chico and 62-year-old Ronald Hockersmith of Peo- ria, Ariz., suffered moderate injuries and were transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.
Lemus was uninjured in the crash as was one of her passengers, 12-year-old Ricardo Hernandez of Lindsay. Another passenger,

A California Highway Patrol officer takes notes at the scene of an Aug. 5 two-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 180 and Frankwood Avenue. The accident claimed the life of a 66-year-old Oakhurst man.
19-year-old Juan Hernandez of Lindsay, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The CHP reported that the crash was still under investigation, but it didn’t appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident.
The crash came barely a week after two crashes in Madera County claimed the lives of eight people, including a husband and wife from Orange Cove and two Kings County area residents with connections to Reedley.
LAWSUIT Continued from page A1
KCUSD officials including the board of trustees “acted un- der color of law creating an establishment of religion on the [RHS] campus, using this establishment to deny Anne Ayers a position on the FCA student leadership council.” The complaint stated that it’s because of Ayers’ LDS beliefs and membership.
The district leadership includes Ron Nelson, multi- area director for Central Val- ley Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Timothy Warken- tin, teacher and school spon- sor at RHS for FCA; and Joel Kersey, student ministries pastor for Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church who led ma- ny FCA meetings on campus.
The complaint said that Ayers filed proper applica- tion forms to be placed on the FCA Leadership Council. She answered one of the questions asking what church she be- longed to or attended, saying Church of Jesus Christ of Lat- ter Day Saints.
The complaint alleges
Ayers was denied a position of leadership by Nelson who stated in a letter to Ayers that when dealing with matters of leadership he needed “crystal clear theology when talking with coaches and athletes.” The complaint added that Nel- son said “I’m not sure if you know the theological differ- ences between the Christian Church [and] LDS, but the grace of God (sending His son to the cross to forgive our sins) is what we believe gets us to heaven [and] not works.”
The lawsuit alleges that the school, district and board failed to respond with action when Ayers’ mother, Yachiro Ayers, met with those parties.
Dobbins said Anne Ayers
has nothing against the Men- nonite Church and “totally re- spects” their beliefs.
“She feels [FCA] didn’t want her in leadership,” he said. “They were trying to point one thing, one reason why she can’t be a part of the leadership. Their policy is wrong.”
Renee Delport with KCUSD said it’s standard prac- tice for the district not to com- ment on pending litigation. Mal- colm Light, senior pastor with RMBC, said church officials are reviewing the lawsuit with counsel and “will issue a re- sponse at the appropriate time.”
Dobbins said that since the lawsuit was filed just last week, no court dates have been scheduled.
