Kirsten Martinez couldn’t find her rhythm walking three batters after recording a ground out. The Eagles scored the first two runs of the game via a hit batter and a wild pitch.
“In the first inning we were a little shaky right there, getting the nerves out of the way,” Patterson said. “That second inning came back and killed us. Her nerves got the best of her early on but she settled down and pitched a great game after that.”
Templeton added another run on an RBI double by freshman Izzy Cowne for a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the frame, the Emperors pieced together a rally. Jordynn Acevedo reached base on a dropped third strike. Patterson inserted courtesy runner, Riley Bautista to run for Acevedo and the next batter, Alexa Garcia, drew a five pitch walk. With Juliana Flores at the plate, Bautista and Garcia advanced on a wild pitch. On a 1-2 count, Flores drilled a one out, two-run double to cut into Templeton’s lead, 3-2. Flores advanced to third base on a wild pitch.

and each time Templeton dodged a bullet.
“I think it was just not getting the timely hits,” Patterson said. “We had the opportunities with girls in position. Some of our younger girls got on the bases and ran really well. We had a lot of stolen bases and we were in position, but it was just that one hit we needed.
The Eagles, who were the CIF
Southern Section Division 5 semifinalists a year ago, relied heavily on Daugherty. After a ground out by Erica Flores, Daugherty struck out seven consecutive batters over the next batters before Kayla Villareal’s grounder with two outs in the top of the third.
Dinuba had avoided a one-out scoring threat to open the game. In the second inning, pitcher
Daugherty fanned the next two batters to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Garcia hit a one-out single and Martinez drew a walk. Patterson inserted Riley and Madison Bautista to run for Garcia and Martinez. The Emperors’ Faith Hernandez battled Daugherty to a full count before launching a deep shot to left fielder Megan Ingle, who made a catch while avoiding the ball from popping out of her glove, for the third out.
In their last at-bats, Alyssa Hernandez and Villareal each drew a walk. Daugherty registered the second out of the inning fanning Erica Flores. With Acevedo at the plate, Hernandez and Villareal advanced to 2nd and 3rd base. Daugherty sealed the game for the Eagles with her 14th strikeout of the game.
Patterson said despite the loss he was proud of the team.
“It doesn’t feel good to lose, but we’re proud of them and the effort they made especially, the seniors and the ride they’ve given us,” Patterson said. “Without them the last four years, this is impossible.”
