COVID case num- bers throughout the Central Valley and state continued to skyrocket heading into this week, reaching their highest levels since early in the pandemic. For the seven-day period end- ing Tuesday, Jan. 25, the positivity rate had jumped by three more percent in Fresno Coun- ty, up to 34.2 percent of nearly 2,300,000 tests.
The daily new case rate per 100,000 soared from 175.6 to 223.9 by Jan. 25, and hospitaliza- tions jumped from 447 to 554. However, deaths increased by only five, to 2,430.

With a new head coach, Reedley College begins a new season of softball at home on Tuesday, Feb. 1 against Cuesta College in a noon doubleheader at RC soft- ball diamond.

Dinuba High's Diana Rico scored four goals for the week, three in a 6-3 victory over Hanford West on Jan. 20. The senior forward- midfielder has 11 goals and seven assists for the season, topped by a four-goal outburst in a non-league victory over Fresno Christian on Jan. 12.

Pirates boys still perfect in NYL
Heading into a Jan. 25 showdown against sec- ond place Edison (results were unavailable at press time), Reedley's boys team held a perfect 4-0 North Yosemite League record. The Pirates (11- 5-3 overall) blanked visit- ing Roosevelt 3-0 on Jan. 18 and then prevailed 3-1 in Fresno against McLane on Jan. 20.
The Reedley girls (3-12-4, 2-1-1) battled to a scoreless tie against McLane High on Jan. 21, after having previous matches against Hoover and Roosevelt postponed by COVID issues.
  As of the Tuesday, Jan. 25 update, there were 196,092 total cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) out of 2,297,594 tests in Fresno County, with 2,430 deaths and 554 people hospitalized (83 in ICU).
Del Rey was at an updated 449 cases (1,287 in region) while the Fowler region had 1,726 cases (1,500 in the city) and an updated 32 deaths through Jan. 25. Squaw Valley (an updated 231 cases), Dunlap and Miramonte had a total case number of 590.
Among Mid Valley Times cities in the county through Jan. 25, the Reedley region continued with the most total overall positive cases with 9,744 (an updated 5,200 in the city proper), and 91 deaths in data on the Fresno County Department of Public Health website.
In Tulare County, there was a total of 88,563 confirmed cases (14,032 active, an increase of 5,974 for the week) of COVID-19 with 1,223 deaths and 158 people hospitalized (13 in ICU) as of Tuesday, Jan. 25. Breakdowns by cities/regions show 7,138 total cases in Dinuba, 2,408 in Orosi, 1,210 in Cutler, 458 in Traver, 172 in the rural area south of Reedley and 48 in the area southeast of Orange Cove.
Through Jan. 25 with no recent updates, Sanger (including immediate surrounding rural areas) continued to show 9,556 cases (an updated 6,900 in the city) and 87 deaths; Parlier was at 3,600 cases (3,815 region) with 49 deaths and Orange Cove had 2,200 (3,694 regional) cases and 20 deaths.
A total of 73,308 people (82.8 percent) in Tulare County were listed as recovered as of Tuesday, Jan. 25.
