Adventist Health gets $205k grant to help heal opioid addiction
Contributed
Community members suffering from opioid addiction will have more healing resources in the Central Val- ley, thanks to a $205,000 grant that was awarded to the Adventist Health Reedley hospital.
The grant, which will fund pre- vention, treatment and recovery ser- vices, was awarded by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation through the Medicated Assisted Treatment
(MAT) Access Points Project. Medi- cated-assisted treatment is the use of FDA-approved medications, in com- bination with counseling and behav- ioral therapies, to provide a “whole- patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. The grant’s goal is to ensure that this treatment supports positive outcomes, safe care transitions and long-term recov- ery for those with opioid and other substance use disorders.
“We are thrilled to receive this
generous grant,” said Dr. John Zwei- fler, Adventist Health medical direc- tor of clinical integration and princi- pal investigator of the grant. “This is a big step forward in providing com- petent and compassionate services that will help our patients and com- munities to heal. It’s what our mission to live God’s love calls us to do.”
The grant will enable Adventist Health Reedley to provide an inno- vative program featuring mobile telehealth services to connect pa-
tients to emergency departments in Reedley and Selma, and Adventist Health clinics in Sanger and Fowler. Patients will receive care from Dr. Marc Lasher, an experienced addic- tion medicine specialist, who also will offer face-to-face visits and after-hour telehealth consultations. Additionally, the grant will enable Lasher to train future generations of family medicine residents in medica- tion-assisted therapy for opioid use disorder.
Similar services were launched at Adventist Health Hanford in Jan- uary. The program in Reedley will allow Adventist Health to expand its care for those experiencing sub- stance use disorders and addiction.
The Medicated Assisted Treat- ment Access Points Project is funded through the California Health Care MAT Expansion Project and adminis- tered by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation. More information is available at mataccesspoints.org.

Firefighters battled a second wildfire within a month in a rural area about six miles north of Orange Cove near Highway 180 on June 20. The second blaze broke out in a hilly area east of Cove Road, and firefighters used airplanes and helicopters to extinguish the blaze. Cal Fire officials said that equipment use was the cause of an earlier wildfire that broke out on May 29 and burned 121 acres before being fully contained on June 1. That blaze started on the east side of Hills Valley Road (High- way 63), north of Orange Cove and about four miles south of Highway 180. Nearly 25 fire units and 100 firefighters battled the fire at its peak. Ground crews, a helicopter and airplanes battled to extinguish the blaze.
