Adrian Agavo, an engi- neer with the Reedley Fire Department, said he some- times finds it difficult to talk about himself. He said, however, it’s not difficult to talk about those who have in- spired his career choice and continues to credit them for his success in the field.
“When I started that’s when I began to meet the other captains here, like Tim Garrison, Rob Ledington, Marty Rodriguez and Albert Rodriguez,” Agavo said. “I’ve always looked up to them, they have inspired me, from family life, to training and professionalism they’ve kept all these years.”
Agavo said he had no plans on becoming a fire- fighter, but a chance encoun- ter changed all of that.
“Honestly, I can’t remem- ber why or how I got into fire, I met a couple guys at the gym one day, we got into talk- ing, they talked me into do- ing it,” he said. “I was young, and at the time I didn’t know what career path I wanted to go down.
“It just went from there,” he continued. “But I did know, I always wanted to help peo-

Agavo attended Califor- nia State University, Fresno and earned his bachelors in criminology. He currently works as a fire captain for the California Department of Corrections.
“After graduation, I saw CDCR open up, it was a great opportunity, great job, ben- efits, retirement,” he said. “Once I got in there, I learned they had a fire captain posi-

tion within the prison. So, as soon as I found out about that position, I began applying for them. Three years later, I landed one of those spots.”
Although the after-ef- fects of a severe call is not something Agavo tries to think about, he said it’s dur- ing the call he feels the most adequate and he knows that in that moment, it’s exactly where he needs to be.
“I can use all my train- ing to help them,” he said. “I’ve been on calls, every- thing from shootings, struc-
ny’s, and was the first priest ordained by the then-new Dio- cese of Fresno in 1968. He was honored April 27, 2018 during a Mass of Thanksgiving at the new St. Anthony Church on Frankwood Avenue.

ture fires, car accidents, in this job you see all that. I’ve learned to put them all away.
“I don’t know why I tend to put these calls away. Could be the severity of the call, I try not to stress over the call afterwards, that type of thing.”
Agavo graduated from Reedley High School in 2005. He lives in Reedley with his wife, Christina, and their 19-month-old son, Caleb.
“To work here in Reedley, it’s been a great experience, I went from not knowing what I wanted to do in life, after high school I went and start- ed doing the college thing, to now working here in Reedley and giving back to the com- munity,” he said.

Staff Report
Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies used electronic se- curity technology to arrest an Orange Cove man who al- legedly stole a pickup truck in Reedley and then eluded authorities in a brief chase through southeast Fresno be- fore ending south of Sanger.
George Boston, 43, was taken into custody and fac- es charges of vehicle theft, evading police and assaulting a police dog. The sheriff’s of- fice also said he had an active no bail warrant for a parole violation related to danger- ous weapons and explosives.
Boston’s total bail was $71,000. He remained in the Fresno County Jail as of June 25.
The June 21 incident be- gan shortly after 3 p.m. when the sheriff’s office received information on a stolen GM truck out of Reedley. Accord- ing to a news release from FCSO, deputies riding in the Eagle One sheriff’s helicop- ter spotted the truck heading west in the area of Butler and DeWolf avenues in Fresno. Deputies and Fresno police officers in patrol cars were

Crawling at about 1 mph, Boston continued driving through a row of trees, and deputies converged on the truck and fired a non-lethal combination of bean bag rounds and a pepper bullet into the read window. Bos- ton refused to surrender, FCSO reported, so Sheriff K-9 Ana was deployed. The dog jumped in the truck and bit Boston, who then surren- dered.

enues.
Law enforcement at- tempted to pull Boston over but he avoided them, drove through neighborhoods and then drove east on Highway 180. At that point, patrol cars stopped pursuing but the helicopter continued to
track him.
Boston exited the free-
way at Clovis Avenue and drove south, at one point driving against traffic but not hitting anyone. He then drove east to the area of North and Del Rey avenues in Sanger, eventually driving into an orange orchard. Dispatchers learned that the pickup truck was equipped with a security safety feature, and they con- tacted the company in an at- tempt to disable the vehicle. The company was abler to remotely deactivate power to the engine, dropping vehicle

Randy Michael Raphael was born November 6, 1961 in Reedley, California. An only child, he was a happy surprise to his parents Mike Raphael and Evelyn Saba Raphael who had married in 1949. He attended St. La Salle Catholic School in Reedley until the sixth grade when he transferred to Lincoln Elementary. There he met his future wife, Holly Egbert, in Miss Eitzen’s class. Later, in high school, they became the best of friends after Randy joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of which Holly was a member. Friendship turned to love and Holly waited for him as he served a two year mission for the LDS Church in Finland. He returned home
to marry his sweetheart in the Los Angeles Temple on June 11, 1983.
Randy was a competitor. He was a county all-star pitcher for the Reedley High School Pirates and ran 60 miles a week in the off season for the cross- country team. He was a good student but wanted to study in his own time and fashion. He spent many hours in the library, sometimes during classes. In college, he always excelled in his studies. He graduated from CSU Fresno with a Bachelor’s in Russian Language and Literature and BYU with a Master’s in Library and Information Science. He worked for the Utah State Board of Education, formerly known as the Utah State Of ce of Education, for most of
his career. He was a friend and mentor to many there.
Randy and Holly adopted two beautiful miracles, Chloe Elisabeth and James
Michael Eblan Raphael who became the joys of their life. Four years ago, Chloe brought a new member into the family when she married Jamie Burns. We love him too. Randy loved learning and teaching himself new things. He was never without a book nearby (usually several) and was known to say, “There is really no place I would rather be than in a library.” He never nished that Ph. D., probably his one big regret in life, but he was looking forward to retirement and moving to Logan to take advantage of the senior discount ($25 to audit any class.) He planned to be a student for the rest of his life.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 17, 2019
at the Kaysville South Stake Center, 900 S. Main Street.
If you want to buy a book for yourself or some curious kid like Randy instead of sending owers, he would probably like that.
