COVID-19 update
Cases continue to lower, mask mandate for children will end
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
Active case numbers continue to drop in large numbers in California this past week, and the state is reacting to the continuing trend by an- nouncing plans to end the indoor mask man- date in schools later this month.
On Feb. 28, the Cali- fornia Department of Public Health announced that after Friday, March 11, the universal mask- ing requirement for K-12 and Childcare set- tings will "terminate."
The department strong- ly recommends that in- dividuals in these set- tings continue to mask in indoor settings when the universal masking requirement lifts.
Also on the 28th the CDPH announced that the mandate for unvac- cinated individuals to mask up in indoor pub- lic setting will switch to a "strong recommenda- tion" as of March 1. The department also encour- ages that all persons, re- gardless of vaccination status, continue to prac- tice indoor masking.
Active cases and hos-
pitalizations continued steep declines in both Fresno and Tulare coun- ties. The 1,492 seven-day active case rates in Fres- no County as of March 1 marked more than five times a smaller rate than on Feb. 8 (7,940). In Tu- lare County, the 1,492 ac- tive cases were a steep drop from 8,353 active cases on Feb. 8.
The rate of vaccina- tions has been increas- ing slowly. As of the Feb. 28 update, just less than 600,000 Fresno County residents had been fully vaccinated (58.7 per- cent).
