Mexico was being on my own,” said Rivera. “I lived with my grandfather. And my grandfather had me with one hand and a bottle of tequila in the other hand.”
By the time Rivera was nine, after five years, his father had secured a green card and then decided to bring the family together in the United States. They first lived in Texas but would spend much time following the crops. The crops took his family to places such as Oklahoma, Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and even Idaho to pick potato.
While in Idaho, Rivera’s father learned about the abundance of crop and work available in the San Joaquin Valley. And in 1957 the Rivera’s made the move to the Valley and set their roots down in Orange Cove. Rivera was just 11-years old.
While in Orange Cove he remembers being in the first class of the new Citrus Middle School. From there he went on Reedley High School, where he excelled as one of the top wrestlers in the Valley, and in the top two in the state in his weight class. His talent on the mat afforded him the opportunity to be the first in his family to go to college.

A few weeks ago, Joe Rivera recounted some stories from his time served in Vietnam at the Veterans Day Ceremony held at Smith Mountain Cemetery. The two times he was injured in combat during his tour earned him two purple hearts.
Those stories are just part of Rivera’s journey, and another big part will be soon available in print form as he is close to releasing his own book.
The book, entitled “A migrant’s journey to Marine”, tells the story of a young Rivera as he entered the United States as a young boy by way of his parent’s migrant work.
The book will be made up of three parts, the first one being a book he wrote about 30 years ago about his youth and road to the military.
Rivera’s journey first began in Guanajuato, Mexico, where he was born. In the early 50’s, when he was just four-years old, Rivera’s parents made the decision to pursue a better life for their family as field workers in the United States. While his parents worked as braceros, he and his sister stayed behind in Mexico with relatives until a way could be secured for them to join them.

Joe Rivera now spends much of his free time as an assistant coach for the Dinuba High School wrestling team. The retired Marine will soon be releasing a book about his journey from Mexico to the wrestling mat and to the military.
pursuing his wrestling passion Rivera elected to join the military.
“I couldn’t keep a 2.0 so I joined the marines,” said Rivera. Rivera was an exception to the rule when he enlisted. The Marines normally didn’t accept enlistees as short as he was, but given the demand for soldiers at the time, at 5’4” he made the cut. He served one term in Vietnam and was wounded twice, both times after his platoon was surrounded. In both cases he was wounded by shrapnel from
mortars and still has the scars on, and in, his body to prove it.
Both of Rivera’s parents returned to Guanajuato to retire. There they purchased a home so that they would have a place for extended family to stay when visiting. Both of his parents would pass away in Guanajuato.
The second part of the book is a second story he wrote entitled “A Summer of ’67” and the third part is a poem he wrote years ago. If all things go according to schedule, the book is expected to be released early next year.
