game for 22 points on 11 of 13 shooting, was equally frustrated. Bullard defenders hit him hard under the basket, and Dhillon scored on just two for eight with four points on the night.
“We have to keep our goal in mind,” Dhillon said. “Which is the Valley. Stay focused. Bounce back from this. Keep doing what we do.”
In the classroom that serves as a locker room, coach Al Alvarado called Bullard one of the top teams in the Valley. But he said that hardly mattered. “They out- hustled us, outworked us,” he said. “There was not too much we could do. We couldn’t get anything done offensively.”
Alvarado said the Edison game will also be tough. “To even have a chance over there, we’ll have to have five guys on the same page,” he said. “Let’s get over this and learn from it. Let’s get ready for phase three.”
Stanley, who had 12 points and two from outside the arc, tried to reassure his teammates. “I know we lost,” he said. “Keep pushin’ folks.”
Cuevas said Bullard defenders were “stuck on me. They just played better than us today.”
Chatman, who had two blocks on the night, was disappointed. “We didn’t play like we usually would,” he said. “We came

locker room after the team post-game meeting, she and a teammate yelled, “We got the Dub.”
That means win.
They were all smiles. “Good game,” Lopez said.
“We needed this game. Our main goal is to make it to Valley. Once we got the win against Bullard (Jan. 24), we knew we could step it up. (And) we changed things up.”
Lopez scored nine points against the Lady Stallions.
“We lost to them last time (64-47) at their house,” said freshman guard Andrea Chapa. “It was sweet.”
Sanger didn’t do as well against Bullard on Feb. 7, losing in the Knights’ den 52-38. “Down three at the half, the Lady Apaches came out in the third quarter, committed seven turnovers and missed 12 shots. Game,” wrote Sanger master statistician Ron Blackwood in his game notes of that match. “Mitchell led the team in scoring with eight. Herring pulled down 13 boards.”
That’s been the season. Wins and losses balancing out. Overall, the Lady Apaches were 13 wins 14 losses after the Bullard game. Bullard wasn’t much different with 13-15, and Madera South was 10-16 after the game with Sanger.
Coach David Campbell said his team had some communication issues in the third quarter with Madera South. “And we didn’t have a good answer for No. 23 (sophomore point guard Lexi Eller). She single-handedly (dominated

that game). She shot the ball well.”
Eller poured in 30 points, grabbed four rebounds and stole the ball twice. She continually twisted past Apache defenders and made layups. She did only hit 50 percent of her free throws for four points, however.
“But the kids kept their composure,” Campbell said. “About five or six weeks ago, we might have squandered the lead away.
“Steph getting that layup (near the end of the game when the lead switched at least three times) was the dagger.
“Overall defense has improved. We were able to put a lot more pressure on them. We kept our cool. We didn’t have bad turnovers. We got good shots off. They’re starting to do more of what we want (coaching wise). If we can cut down on our turnovers, that makes us even more solid.”
Blackwood called it a big win.
Now comes the hard part.

out hot, but we didn’t play like we were there.”
Stanley said the good thing is that Bullard and Edison are Division I, and Sanger is Division III. “They’re not a team we’ll see in the playoffs,” he said. “It’s tough to lose, but we’re still a top seed in the playoffs. The season’s not over yet. I don’t want everyone to hang their heads even though it’s senior night.
“We’ll be alright.”
Amundsen said a couple more interesting things. “Their offensive rebounding kept them in the game,” he said. “We did a good job of staying in front of them.”
The Apaches just need to get out front. And stay there.
