The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local garden- ers who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beauti- ful all year long.
Celebrate spring by giving a basket of flow- ers or vegetables to someone special.
Tasks for this time of year include pulling weeds and hoe often to minimize reseeding.
After mulching, check to make sure your irrigation runs are wa- tering through the mulch to the correct rooting depth. If not, increase run times.
When pruning, re-
member to remove dead branches from shrubs, deadhead roses to en- courage more blooms.
Thin the fruit of apri- cot peach, nectarine and plum trees to about 6 to 8 inches apart.
Use trimmings in compost pile or chip and use as mulch.
When fertilizing, feed bedding plants with all- purpose fertilizer high in phosphorus.
Fertilize citrus by fol- lowing directions on the container.
Plant summer veg- etables at two-week in- tervals to prolong their harvest.
Bulbs, corms, tubers: fortnight lily (Dietes).
Fruits and vegeta-
bles: cantaloupe, chard, chayote.
Fruits and vegetables: cucumber, grapefruit. Things to ponder, to wa- ter hillsides, set emitters on upper side of slope.
Continue to monitor and destroy slugs and snails.
