Lady Apaches win rst two league games
MVT Staff Report
The Sanger High Lady Apaches’ var- sity basketball team is off to their best start in years after winning their first two games of league play last week.
Beginning league play with a thrill- ing one-point victory over visiting Edi- son, who finished second place last year in the CMAC, Sanger improved to 14-5 after beating the Tigers 47-46 on Jan. 15.
In a seesaw battle in which Edison lead by just one point at halftime (20-19), Sanger was able to take a 3-point lead with just over a minute remaining in the game after a made free throw by junior Andrea Chapa.
With just 29 second remaining, Edi- son’s Jada Heights drew her team to within one point with two made free throws of her own. The Tigers then had a late opportunity with just a few ticks on the clock, however Edison’s long in- bound pass was intercepted by Sanger’s Ana Delfin to seal the victory for the Lady Apaches.
Chapa led Sanger in scoring with 17 points, most of those points scored from
beyond the arc as she made four 3-point- ers. Sanger High’s Natali Herrera fin- ished with a double-double as the fresh- man scored 11 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.
Sanger improved to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in league after dismantling Madera South 63-32 on Friday, Jan. 17, in the team’s second league game. Leading the way again for the Lady Apaches was Chapa, who finished with 18 points and again made four 3-pointers. She also had four steals in Sanger’s victory.
Sanger High’s Mallory Scott helped keep the ball in her team’s possession by crashing the boards, finishing with seven rebounds.
As of Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Lady Apaches were atop the league stand- ings, where they sat tied for first place with last year’s CMAC champions San Joaquin Memorial. Sanger will host the Panthers on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The Lady Apaches traveled to take on Madera High yesterday. Results from that game were not available at press time.

MVT Staff Report
A rugged six-game road swing started promising enough for the Immanuel High boys basketball team last week, but the Eagles then stumbled before a challenge at Central Sequoia League co-lead- er Kingsburg High.
Immanuel roared out to a 21-point lead after one quarter against a Hanford West team minus three starters on Jan. 15, cruising to a 61-45 victory over the host Huskies. But the Eagles (10-9, 2-4) couldn’t maintain the momentum in Visalia on Jan. 17 and dropped a 55-46 decision to Central Valley Christian.
As a result, Immanuel finds itself two games back in the loss column behind the Vikings and Dinuba High entering the Jan. 21 game at Kingsburg (results were unavailable at press time).
Juniors Winston Williams and Shawn Rodgers, the top returning scorers from last year’s Division 4 state runners-up squad, paced Im- manuel in scoring against Hanford West with 20 and 17 points, respec- tively. Guard Jonah Tolpezninkas added 12 points, and the Eagles opened the game with an 18-0 run and built the lead to 30 points by halftime. Hanford West was never able to threaten in the second half.
Immanuel stayed close with CVC throughout the first half, trailing 28-23 at the break. But Luke Van Groningen sank a pair of 3-point baskets during a 15-6 run in the third that broke the game open. The Eagles fell be-
hind by as many as 18 points, but fought back to get within single figures by game’s end.
The Eagles were limited to 34 percent shooting from the field, and against struggled from the foul line hitting just 44 percent of their free throws. Williams led the team’s scoring with 27 points while Rodgers finished with 10 points.
The next CSL road game for Immanuel is at Exeter on Thurs- day, Jan. 23, followed by a 6:45 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 25, against Cesar Chavez High of Delano as part of the “Pagmeter” tournament at Fresno Christian High School. The Eagles conclude the road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Dinuba High in a scheduled 7:30 start. The Emperors pre- vailed in the first meeting by a 65-60 score in Reedley on Jan. 3.

Immanuel High’s girls picked
up their first league win of the season, rallying from an early eight-point deficit and taking com- mand in the third quarter for a 48- 42 victory at Central Valley Chris- tian High on Jan. 17 in Visalia.
Sammie Greene scored nine of her game-high 18 points and Alegria Pena five of her 10 points in the second period as the Eagles (6-14, 1-5) outscored the Cavaliers 14-5 to take a 23-22 halftime lead. Greene scored a pair of baskets in the third period as IHS built a seven-point lead entering the fi- nal eight minutes.
Immanuel held on for the win with good free throw shoot- ing. The Eagles sank 8 of 11 in
the final quarter, with Greene and Brooke Hatch sinking three each. Hatch scored all nine of her points in the period, and the Eagles finished strong to end a four-game losing streak.
Earlier in the week, Immanuel lost 62-56 at home to Hanford West when the Huskies closed the game with a 23-12 run in the final quar- ter. Foul shooting was a key for the visitors, who sank 13 of 22 from the stripe the final eight minutes.
Greene led the Eagles with 23 points, nine rebounds and a block. She had 16 points in the first half, nine in the second quarter as IHS led 33-30 at the break.
Pena scored 14 points includ- ing a trio of 3-point baskets, while Hatch had nine points and a pair of steals. The Eagles made just 9 of 31 from the foul line.
Immanuel had a scheduled non-league game at Fresno Chris- tian School on Jan. 18, but the contest was canceled and won’t be made up.
The girls continued their six- game road swing with a Jan. 21 CSL contest at Kingsburg; results were unavailable at press time. That’s followed by a Thursday, Jan. 23, game at Exeter (6 p.m. tipoff) and a noon non-league game Saturday, Jan. 25, against Golden Valley High School at the Mission Oak Showcase in Tulare.
The road trip ends Wednesday, Jan. 29, with a 6 p.m. game at Di- nuba. The Eagles close their home season on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. against Selma High.
