MVT Staff Report
Marcus McMaryion, Dinuba High graduate and former Fresno State quarterback, brought life lessons to students at Traver School during a visit to campus on Jan. 14.
McMaryion came to the school on an invita- tion from Jon Goats, who teaches fourth grade at the school and also is the lead pastor for Traver Church of God. Goats said that he knew McMaryion’s fam- ily since growing up in church with them when he was a child.
“I felt as though Marcus could motivate the students of Traver since he also grew up in a small rural town,” Goats said.
McMaryion — who as a starting quarterback led Fresno State to a 21-4 re- cord over two seasons and the Mountain West Cham- pionship in 2018 — spoke to the Traver students about working through life’s challenges, pursuing excellence and selecting

friends friends carefully, according to Goats.
“Marcus stuck around to take photos with every class of the school as well as sign autographs,” he said. “He took a photo with Traver’s undefeated football team too. It really made their day.”
McMaryion starred in athletics and academ- ics at Dinuba High, lead- ing the Emperors to a Central Section Division 3 title in 2014 while com- piling a 3.98 grade point average. He graduating from Oregon State Uni- versity in three years
with a public health de- gree, and played two season at OSU before coming to Fresno State as a graduate transfer.

nated outside Reedley and made no mention of a spe- cific school. Investigators said the post had been used in other instances.
“The number one rea- son why a message wasn’t put out is we feel like we have to be responsible with our facts and not cause a frenzy with ru- mors,” Ahlin said, adding that classes also had ad- journed for the day. “We have to wait for facts. And part of that is, when you want the facts and the truth about anything, you have to be patient and you work with your law en- forcement partners.”
Still, there were reper- cussions from parents. On Jan. 16, about two-thirds of the school’s 1,900 stu- dents were absent from class. Ahlin said it was business as usual that day for the students that did come to school.
“We did everything like we normally would,” he said. “It was an un- eventful day. It was regu- lar school. I was able to tour classes like normal. Kids were learning, teach-
ers were teaching and [they] were all talking. Basically, just a normal school day.
The graffiti and ex- cessive absences weren’t the only hiccup the school experienced last week. On Jan. 14, the first day of regular classes after three weeks of winter va- cation, a short in a wire caused a main fuse to blow out, knocking out power to part of the cam- pus.
“People need to under- stand that we were never fully out of power,” Ah- lin said. “We were at one point at the very end of the day when they were trouble shooting it, and then we dismissed and went home. We actually had empty rooms where we were able to move quite a few [students] to rooms where there was power.”
By Friday, Jan. 17, at- tendance was back to nor- mal and all classes were fully powered after Pacif- ic Gas & Electric Co. elec- tricians had replaced all fuses and tested the sys- tem earlier in the week.
