A late miscue by Di- nuba paved the way for a goal by Orosi’s senior midfielder Emily Gonza- lez in a 1-0 win Thursday evening in Dinuba.
“Those are the games we live for,” said OHS coach Jesse Camarena. “We’re going to compete until the end, but in soc- cer you got to be lucky sometimes and we got lucky there.”
Gonzalez was at the right place at the right time when Dinuba failed to clear the ball after a shot attempt with under 10 minutes remaining in the match. The victory was the third in the last four matches for the Car- dinals who are 8-1-6 while Dinuba dropped to 4-5-2 overall.
“All we had to do was have one or the other [player] clear the ball and they didn’t,” said DHS coach Claudia Diaz. “That’s all it took.”
The Lady Emperors entered the match on the heels of a 3-2 win over Selma that ended a three game losing streak. All three of those losses have been by a goal that included a 1-0 setback to

The Sanger High varsity girls’ basketball team im- proved to 11-3 on the season and picked up their 700th win in program history af- ter winning their final two games of the year last week.
The victories didn’t come easy for the Lady Apaches, as they used a third quarter rally to beat host Roosevelt High on Dec. 17, after fall- ing behind 22-20 at halftime.
Led by the scoring of Sanger High junior Tay- lor Roth, who finished the game with 26 points, the Lady Apaches outscored the Rough Riders 16 to 8 in the third quarter to take the lead and subsequent 48-43 win.
Also scoring in double digits for Sanger was soph- omore Mallory Scott, who chipped in with 10 points. Freshman Aleena Hardin pulled down 10 rebounds in Sanger’s victory over Roos- evelt, while sophomore Elise LeBeau dished out five as- sists.
The following day, Sanger hosted Div. 2 Red- wood in a highly contested match that also featured a third-quarter rally by the Lady Apaches.
Down 35-29 at the break,
Sanger mounted a come- back in the third quarter by outscoring the Rangers 15- 10 in the third quarter and then 15-14 in the fourth. A late bucket by Redwood’s Janessa Haro tied the game with just 12 seconds remain- ing, forcing overtime.
In overtime, Roth scored a two-pointer with just over a minute left to put Sanger up by one point. A couple of made free throws by Hardin gave the Lady Apaches a 69- 66 lead with just 36 seconds remaining, eventually seal- ing the victory for Sanger.
Roth was able to match her performance from the previous day with 26 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and 56 percent (5 of 9) from three-point range.
Sanger High junior Mia Castro pitched in with 14 points and was 10 of 12 from the free throw line and also hauled in eight rebounds.
At 11-3, the Lady Apach- es’ record is currently the best in the CMAC and third best in Division 3 of the Cen- tral Section.
Sanger returns to the court on Jan. 2 when they are scheduled to play Garc- es Memorial in Clovis at Buchanan’s New Year Clas- sic. The tournament will last until Jan. 4.
