Thursday, October 10, 2019 Aviation talk with Boeing | A11 | Mid Valley TiMes NISHINAKAS Continued from page A1 and became the church's first woman president in 2015. She then served as president of the Central California District Coun- cil in 2016. Their extensive background, civic in- volvement and love of Reedley made them ob- vious choices by the Fi- esta Committee for the 2019 event. "I think it's an excit- ing adventure just to represent Reedley and be there for the commu- nity," Kathy said. "Reed- ley is special. Maybe I'm prejudiced because I've been here awhile. It just has that hometown atmosphere that I think is lacking in bigger cit- ies." Both Ron and Kathy are Central Valley na- tives, although Ron was born in a U.S. Govern- ment concentration camp in Arizona dur- ing World War II. But Reedley is his child- hood home, and after his third-generation family returned to Reedley af- ter the war ended when he was 3, Ron learned English when he started kindergarten at Wash- ington Elementary School. Nishinaka said he's extremely fortunate to have been raised and educated in Reed- ley schools. He played baseball in Little League and Babe Ruth League, played clarinet in the then-General Grant Ju- nior High School March- ing Band and then let- tered in two sports at Reedley High School be- fore graduating in 1961. Ron then attended Reed- ley College and gradu- ated from then-Fresno State College in 1964 and then University of San Francisco. He served nearly three years on a Northern California in- ternship in Sacramento. EXPOSURE Continued from page A5 suspect. All of the victims gave the same description of the suspect, his vehicle and his actions. Reedley police then reached out to surrounding agencies and found that the Fresno County Sheriff's Office and Sanger Police Department had re- ceived similar reports giving similar descriptions. Zieba and Oldham, the manager of the Sustainable Aviation project of state-of-the-art electri- cal aircraft that Reedley and Mendota are partnering in with Fresno, met with Boeing officials to discuss the project's plans to do pilot training for low-income youth. She graduated from Fresno State with a teaching degree and worked at Wishon and Burroughs grammar schools in the Fresno area. The Nishinakas met at a Central California Young Buddhist As- sociation conference when Ron was a new in- structor of ornamental horticulture at Reedley College and Kathy was a college student. "We got to talking and never stopped," she said with a laugh. The couple married in 1972, settled in Reedley and began their life together in the area. Ron said he's grate- ful for his eight years as a trustee with SCCCD. He noted the passage of Measure C in 2016 and the growth of Reedley College as two events he was proud to have helped play a part in. "It was a wonderful opportunity to serve, and to promote educa- tion in our area.," he said. And Ron still scratches the itch to teach. He's an instructor in an ornamental horti- culture class at Fresno State. "The majority of the students are future ag ed teachers. That's given me a real oppor- tunity to go back to my alma mater," he said. Kathy said the cou- ple's travels tend to take them back to Indianap- olis, where two of their grandchildren live. But Reedley remains special to both, and is a big part of Ron's life. "I guess I can say I'm very blessed to have grown up in Reedley and all the opportuni- ties we've had to grow," he said.
