Underage drinking enforcement operation from Reedley PD leads to seven arrests
MVT Staff Report
On March 12, officers with the Reedley Police Department conducted an underage drinking enforcement operation in the city limits. The op- eration was designed to create awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and demon- strate the serious conse- quences for adults who buy alcohol for minors.
The Reedley Police Department with assis- tance from the Califor- nia Department of Al- cohol Beverage Control conducted a program called a Decoy Shoulder
Tap Operation. Under the program, a minor under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indi- cates in some way he or she is underage and can- not purchase the alcohol. If the adults agree and purchase alcohol for the minor, officers then ar- rest and cite them for furnishing alcohol to the minor. The penalty for furnishing alcohol to a minor is a minimum $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service. The program is intended
to reduce the availability of alcohol to minors.
During the opera- tion approximately 50 patrons were contacted, of which seven agreed to purchase alcohol for the minors. The seven
suspects were arrested and issued citations to appear in court.
This detail was fund- ed by a grant through the California Depart- ment of Alcohol Bever- age Control.
