Before she passed away, Aurora Mata of Sanger used her van to serve the community and her church at any opportunity. She delivered food and supplies and transported people when they needed a ride.
After her passing, her family thought it would only be appropriate for the van to continue in the spirit of her mission. And so, they donated to Hope Sanger, where the van will con- tinue to serve the community.
“I was just amazed that they did this,” said Julie Mendoza, who heads up Hope Sanger. “She was such a ser- vant.”
The van was donated in June of last year. After all the paper work was com- pleted to transfer the van, Mendoza wondered if it could be restored. So she turned to Xtreme Auto Collision owner John Placencia.
Mendoza had worked with him re- cently after her son was involved in a fender bender and needed some repair work.
“I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask,” said Mendoza of asking Placencia if he would be willing to donate the work. “All he could say was no... But he said yes.”
“It needed a lot of work,” said Pla- cencia. “We brought it back to life.
“It’s for a good cause,” he added. “I think everyone can pitch in and do something, even something small. I was able to give it a paint job, other people may be able to give advice... whatever you can do.”
The vehicle was dropped off with Placencia in mid August and returned to Hope Sanger looking brand new on Oct. 10. All together, about $7,000 worth of work went into restoring the 1986 Astro Van.

COX
Continued from page A1
“Oh my God!” said one audience member. “You’re a congressman and you don’t even know that?”
Nancy Pelosi’s broth- er-in-law, Ron Pelosi, was once married to a Barba- ra Newsom, the aunt of Gavin Newsom. The two divorced in 1977, making Ron Pelosi the former un- cle-by-marriage to Gov- ernor Newsom. House Speaker Pelosi and Cali- fornia Governor Newsom were never really related.
Cox, however, took the meeting stride.
“We’re there to work for the people,” he said in his opening comments. “We’re going to be as re- sponsive as possible.”
When asked about the current impeachment inquiry, Cox stated that in spite of what is being presented in the media, working on current is- sues remains a priority in the House of Repre- sentatives.
“Most care about the
things that matter today,” he stated. “And, I didn’t go to Washington to impeach a president. I came to work for the constituents I represent.”
In regards to water storage, Cox said the is- sue remains at the top of his list as we works for the 21st California District.
“That’s one of the key things I’m doing in con- gress,” Cox replied.
He said, in effort to reach a solution to the Val- ley’s water storage issues, he joined two committees that are instrumental in achieving the necessary changes – the US Ag Com- mittee and the US Natural Resources Committee, of which he was made chair- man of a subcommittee.
He added the Friant/ Kern Canal remains a key project in providing much needed water to Valley’s agriculture industry, which remains the largest producer in the country.
He also brushed aside the notion of doing away with the current electoral voting college system, ar-
guing that it should not be a priority.
Said Cox, “Rather than focusing on the elec- toral college, let’s focus on the electing the right candidates.”
He also noted there does seem to be a strug- gle and challenge in gar- nering appropriate repre- sentation between rural and urban areas.
Health care seemed to be one issue the house representative took to heart, arguing that two- thirds of people who did not have any coverage now do because of the Affordable Care Act. He said those individuals are currently at risk of losing coverage as the current administration looks to do away with the ACA.
“We are just one vote away from throwing the whole ACA out,” Cox told the audience.
He stated that the number one predictor in determining whether a person who has cancer will die is whether or not the person has health in- surance.

time and talent,” expressed Mendoza. Hope Sanger is a non-profit orga- nization founded in 2011 and manages a once crime and drug infested motel on 5th and L streets in Sanger. Under Mendoza’s management, the organiza- tion has transformed the former motel into a temporary shelter for homeless families and serves meals to transients in the community. It also offers many other services to help those going
through a life crisis.
Said Mendoza of her time at Hope
Sanger, “Managing the motel has been a challenge, but the transformation of the neighborhood, the building itself and the clients we serve has proven that all our hard work is worth it to help those who need a hand up.”
In a joint effort with Mid Valley Times, Hope Sanger will be conducting a paper-drive next week in Sanger as part of their yearly fundraisers. Look for a feature story highlighting what the organization provides to the com- munity in The Times' Oct. 24 edition.
