The "Garden Check- list" is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Now that October is in full swing, the weath- er profile remains dry and drought condi- tions may contin- ue through the fall.
Tasks throughout the month include, monitor- ing rainfall and adjust- ing water accordingly to keep soil moist for new plantings.
And putting organic mulch around perma- nent plants to conserve water and prevent weeds.
Remember, trees need to be deeply wa-
tered as they enter dor- mancy.
Also, prune shrubs and trees to shape. Pruning junipers during cool weather prevents sunburn.
Deadhead and shape rose bushes to promote final fall bloom.
When fertilizing, re- member to feed cool- season lawns with time- release granular fertil- izer.
Fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to promote fall growth.
When planting, con- tinue staggered planting of cool-weather vegeta- bles.
Perennials: agave, dianthus. Bulbs, corms, tubers: brodiaea, cro- cus, freesia.
Fruits and vegetables onions, parsley, radish.
Annuals: lark- spur (Consolida), flow- ering kale.
Trees, shrubs, vines: Goldenchain tree (La- burnum) , pomegranate (Punica).
Now is the time to enjoy annuals and pe- rennials: dianthus, alys- sum (Lobularia).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: artichokes, cau- liflower, figs, grapes, kale.
Trees, shrubs, vines: crape myrtle, bayberry (Berberis), beautyberry (Callicarpa).
Fall color: maiden- hair (Ginkgo biloba), goldenrain tree (Koel- reuteria).
Things to ponder, remember to store un- used fertilizers and pes- ticides in a dry, warm place. Pesticides should
be stored in a separate, locked cabinet or con- tainer.
Drought tip - post- pone unnecessary fall planting until rainfall replenishes soil mois- ture and supplement all watering is no longer needed.
