Eagles off to 2-0 Selma start
Late CW rally stuns Reedley to begin Easter Classic play Staff Report
The Immanuel High baseball team flexed its muscles during the opening day of the Selma Easter Classic tourna- ment on April 15, rolling to two decisive victories including a shutout of a Sierra Pacific team that entered the tourna- ment with just one loss on the season.
The Eagles — playing in the friendly confines of "The Yard" at the Immanu- el Sports Complex — blasted the 16-5 Wasco Tigers 14-1 in five innings, then rode the strength of senior JT Friesen's complete game pitching performance to blank the Golden Bears, 6-0. The wins improved Immanuel to 18-3 on the sea- son.
It also put the Eagles into position to play their way into the tournament finals, which were scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 17 at Selma High. Immanuel had a night game with San Leandro High on April 16 (results were unavailable at press time) and an afternoon contest with Chavez High from Delano on April 17. both at The Yard. Wins almost certainly would place the Eagles into the title game.
Friesen turned in a steady, but domi- nating, performance against Sierra Pa- cific from Hanford. The righthander al- lowed just two hits and struck out five while walking just one in an 80-pitch outing to improve to 8-1 on the season. He's struck out 59 and walked 16 in 61.1 innings of work.
It appeared to be a pitcher's battle early on, as senior pitcher Will Springer struck out five and allowed just one hit through three innings. But the Eagles' bats erupted in the fourth inning as they pushed across five runs off Springer, who still finished with nine strikeouts in four innings.
Roman Rosales delivered the big blow of the evening with an RBI triple — his third three-bagger of the day — while Trace Pires and Moses Gomez also drove in runs. Rosales also delivered a sacrifice fly while Derek Wood (two runs scored) and Gomez also collected two hits in the game. Immanuel finished with eight hits.

A 3-2 loss at home to Porterville College has dropped the Reedley College Lady Tiger softball team to second place in the Central Valley Conference.
Head Coach Kathy Kuball’s squad took a CVC record of 15-3 and an overall mark of 29-8 into an April 16 doubleheader at Merced College before closing out the regular season on Thursday, April 18, with a 1 p.m. single game at Fresno City College. College of the Sequoias leads the con- ference at 16-2 and 23-12.
Northern California Regional ac- tion begins on May 4.
Reedley used a four-run first in- ning rally and three more runs in the
second to down Porterville 7-4 in the first inning of the twinbill. Sandra Vallejo’s two-run single was the big blow in the first inning before Mari- ah Hernandez led off the second with a triple to the left center field gap. Hernandez later added a double and a single while Vallejo had two more singles to lead a 12-hit attack.
Emily Grimbeby went the dis- tance on the mound to record her 20th win of the season, scattering five hits and striking out 10.
But the strategy to walk the CVC’s leading home run hitter, Kiki Angliau, backfired in the second game as Annisa Gomez, hitting be- hind Angilau, drove in a first inning run with a double before erasing a 2-1 deficit with a two-run homer in

the sixth. Gomez also hit a two-run shot in the first game.
Injuries to catcher Samantha Lizaola and center fielder Bobbie Falcon in the opener left the Tigers with only nine healthy players for the nightcap. After ripping PC start- ing pitcher Alexis Rodriguez for five runs in one-plus innings in the opener, Reedley managed only two singles off Rodriguez in four-and- two-thirds innings of relief.
Reedley bounced back on April 11 with a five-inning 11-2 win in Ridgecrest over Cerro Coso. The Ti- gers broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the third before breaking it open with seven runs in the fifth.
Aunika Castellanos and Vallejo both drove in two runs for the win- ners while Mariah Hernandez, Patty Hernandez, Amanda Beltran and Castellanos (who scored three runs) all had two hits. Eight different Ti- gers drove in runs.
BASEBALL Tigers play spoiler by defeating COS
Even though they only won one game of the three-game series last week, the Reedley College Tiger baseball team was able to knock Col- lege of the Sequoias into a tie with Fresno City College for the lead in the Central Valley Conference.
