big win over McFarland
Eagles will take on Pirates tomorrow in first round of Division V playoffs for Reedley bragging rights
MVT Staff Report
The Immanuel High Eagles tuned up for this week’s football playoff game against Reedley
High with another domi- nating ground perfor- mance.
The Eagles rushed for 402 yards — led by senior running back Matt Tiger
with 271 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries — and broke open a tight game at halftime with 21 third quarter points in a 56-28 dismantling of the McFarland High Cou- gars. Immanuel carries an 8-2 record into the 7 p.m. first round matchup Friday, Nov. 8, against the Pirates at Sal Gon- zalez Field. It’s the first- ever varsity meeting in football between the two Reedley programs.
“Friday’s game will be an historic one,” Eagles coach Drew Halstead said. “We’re excited for our program and the Reedley community. It will be a great game.”
Immanuel had its hands full for the first 24 minutes against McFar- land, as the hosts grabbed a 20-14 lead with two rush touchdowns and a 35-yard pass play. But junior Win- ston Williams, who rushed for 50 yards on just four carries, scored from 7 yards out with three min- utes left in the half to put the Eagles ahead, 21-20.
Tiger then delivered the knockout blow in the third quarter. Af- ter Tiger’s 3-yard TD run extended the Im- manuel lead to 28-20, Trace Pires recovered a McFarland fumble and Tiger converted with a 40-yard scoring run. Ti- ger then racked up his third touchdown in a five-minute game span in the quarter, shredding the Cougars’ defense on a 64-yard scoring sprint.
Immanuel scored twice more in the fourth, with Tiger throwing a 15-yard TD pass to Pires and quarterback Hector Davila finding the end zone on a 5-yard run. Ti- ger has more than 1,300 rush yards and 11 rush TDs this season.
Defensively, Pires collected an intercep- tion and fumble recov- ery along with five tack- les. Williams registered a pair of quarterback sacks and nine tackles while linebacker Michael Kawagoe had eight tack- les.

has seen just about everything this year,” he said. “Coaches prepare our guys well, and we’ll be prepared this week as well. Game plans started as soon as we found out who it was.”
Against Sunnyside, Reedley High was playing for the school’s first outright league championship since 1972 but was victimized by costly mistakes, a quick start by the hosts and a deflating touchdown just before halftime.
“We didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game,” Gates said. “We made some uncharacter- istic mistakes. We snapped the ball at an odd time, we had an untimely interception and we kind of messed up a few assignments.”
The Wildcats (6-4, 5-0) jumped to a quick 16-0, but quarterback Michael Rios’ touchdown run cut the deficit to 10 points in the sec- ond quarter. They then moved into scoring position late in the half, but turned the ball over and the hosts scored just before the break to ex- tend the lead to 24-6.
“They’re a good, solid team,” Gates said of Sunnyside. “They run what they run very well. Their de- fensive front is as physical and fast as the other teams we played this year.”

Laisha Arteaga
OROSI HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL
Orosi High sophomore Laisha Arteaga is named Athlete of the Week as the sophomore middle hitter had a team-high 11 kills and recorded four blocks in a opening round Division V playoff loss against Fresno High. The Lady Cardinals nished the season with an overall record of 21-8-2.
Reedley High quarterback Michael Rios sprinted into the end zone for a touchdown in the first half of the Pirates’ game with Sunnyside High on Oct. 31 in Fresno. The Wildcats jumped to a 16-0 lead, scored just before halftime and then pulled away in the second half for a 38-6 victory.
The final two games of Reedley’s four-game win streak featured a three-man contingent of normal wide receiver Rios, running back Danny Cortez and receiver Max Alvarez taking snaps at quarter- back in a wildcat offensive set. The change came because of a shoulder injury suffered by quarterback Gannon Gabaldon in the win over Fresno. Gabaldon sat out the past two games, and remains question- able for the playoff contest.
Defensively, Gates praised the play of sophomore middle lineback- er Abraham Soto against Sunnyside.
“He put his head in there against much bigger guys, and laid the wood pretty good,” he said.
Gates said a home playoff game is a good reward for the team.
“I’m real happy we could bring this chance to the school,” he said. “November football, playoff at- mosphere. We know [Immanuel is] going to bring lots of fans and we’ll bring lots of fans, It’s going to be something for the school to remember.”
Presale tickets for the game will be available for purchase at both schools.
