Reedley, Sanger rivarly still alive on the diamond

They may not play each other in foot- ball anymore, but judging by the emo- tions from last week’s matchup between the Sanger and Reedley varsity baseball teams, the rivalry is far from over.
In a semifinals match of the Central Valley Diamond Classic on March 4, it was the Pirates who came away victo- rious after the Apaches rallied in the seventh inning to extend the game into extra innings, where Reedley ran away with it, socring five unanswered runs for the 8-3 victory.
Reedley High pitcher William Ga- gnon held the Apaches hitless until the third inning and shut them out until the fifth when Sanger’s Mason Lopez drove in a run to tie the game at one run apiece.
But the Pirates would respond in their ensuing at-bat, racking up five hits in the inning and scoring two runs. Reed- ley’s Jacob Franco collected an RBI in the inning on a shot to shallow left field and teammate Aaron Larm would reach home on an error at first base to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
The game got tense in the bottom of the sixth after Sanger’s first two batters reached base on consecutive walks. An error then scored Apaches’ Tiz Moreno to cut the Pirates lead to one.
Later in the inning, with bases loaded and two outs, Gagnon was able to get out of jam after going from an 0-2 count to a full count. After striking out Sanger’s Jesse Campos to end the inning, an ex- change of words followed between Ga-
gnon and the Apache’s dugout, forcing the umpire to warn both teams.
Sanger tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice bunt by Apaches’ Joey Rodriguez, scoring team- mate Nathan Padilla, who reached base on a line drive to left field.
The Pirates, however, blew it open in the top of the eighth inning, scoring five runs off Padilla, who had come in as the relief pitcher in the seventh inning. Reedley had 12 hits against the Apaches, compared to Sanger’s seven. Last week’s win also marked the first time Reedley beat Sanger in varsity baseball since April 7, 2010.
The victory gave Reedley a 7-1 over- all record and their sixth win in a row. It also set up a rematch with Dinuba High for the Central Valley Diamond Clas- sic Championship, in which the Pirates prevailed by a 5-4 score. (See story on front page of Sports for more details.) The two teams met in the first game of the season on Feb. 7, a game in which the Pirates won 10-0.
Reedley’s next game will be Thurs- day, March 13, when they host Orange Cove. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
As for Sanger, the loss against Reed- ley was their third of the season and gave them a 4-3 record. They played Fowler on Saturday in the consolation round of the CVDC.
The Apaches will open CMAC play tomorrow night with a home game against Edison. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
