Sentinel staff report
Members of the Dinuba High girls basketball and golf team came together to brighten the holiday season for a family in the community.
Prior to the girls’ basketball game on December 21, the team’s presented Angelina Villareal and her children with gifts in the gymnasium. The Villareal family lost two members of the family the past year and members of the team,
parents and coaching staffs pulled together to help the family. Businesses You-Be’s Pizza, the Wakehouse in Reedley donated a sit down meal for the family and New Evolution Insurance donated a gift card.
DHS basketball player Kaylee Villasenor said the children enjoyed their gifts.
“You can tell they really enjoyed it,” she said. “We gave the mom a memory blanket. It was real emotional.”
e bread of kings
Rick Curiel | The Sentinel
Every year around this time, many Catholic Christians celebrate the Day of the Epiphany, Jan. 6, with what is called the the 'Rosca de Reyes' (Wreath of Kings). The sweet bread has become a tradition throughout many parts of the world, and is popular with many Latin cultures. The shape of the bread (oval) symbolizes a crown, and the candied fruits that adorn the cake represent the jewels from the crowns of the three kings who came to baby Jesus to pay homage to the new King. A baby figurine is hidden inside the cake, symbolizing Mary and Joseph hiding baby from Jesus from Herod, as they sought refuge in Egypt. Traditionally, the cake is divided amongst a family, and the one who finds the baby Jesus gets to provide a meal for the entire family on Feb. 3, which honors the day baby Jesus was presented at the temple.
The tradition for the bread is said to go back 14th century France.

other parts of California who are just like me, and who have the same type of ambitions,” said Gonzalez.
On top of being a 4.8 student at Dinuba High School, Gonzalez is also involved in several school clubs. She is an officer in the school’s HOSA club, is in the Spirit Club, participates in National History Day and is also part of Catholics In Action (CIA).
She is also the fourth DHS Medical Pathway student in a row to be selected by the Dinuba Womans’ Club for the prestigious event.
Outside of school, Gonzalez also helps with the Miracle League of Visalia, the Rescue Mission of Visalia and is a special needs tutor and was as a summer crew leader for St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Last year she also helped out with Open Gate Ministries and the Special Olympics, all while wearing a Cinco de Mayo Princess crown.
In her application for the HOBY Leadership Conference, Gonzalez wrote, “High school has allowed me to realize that I am destined to be
a leader. Being involved provides me with an immense amount of resources, and has improved my organization and communication skills.”
Though Gonzalez says her journey has been blessed, she also finds that the challenges along the way are what push her further.
“Learning to fail has been my greatest challenge,” Gonzalez wrote. “Despite the challenges, I have been successful both socially and academically.”
In the event Gonzalez is unable to attend this year’s HOBY Leadership Seminar, the Dinuba Womans’ Club chose as an alternate Dinuba High School sophomore Antonio de Jesus Melano Lopez.
Lopez also maintains a high grade point average of 4.67 and is part of the school’s ACCEPT Club and Hiking Club. When he has time he provides free tutoring, volunteers at the Dinuba Library Summer Reading Program and currently is in the process of an extensive math research project.
