I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
- Timothy 4: 7-8
Ronald Joseph Staelgraeve was born in Monroe, Michigan to Irene (Bertram) and Archie Staelgraeve. Known by his siblings as “Ronnie,” “Ron” to his friends and coworkers, and “Hun,” “Dad” and “Papa’’ to the people who loved him most. A devout Catholic of Belgian and German descent, Ron was known to have a strong faith. He attended St. Patrick School in Carleton, MI and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Monroe, MI. His children remember Sunday mornings in mass at St. Anthony’s in Reedley, where he would recite the prayers, modeling for them as he kept a stern eye making sure no one misbehaved. He enjoyed sharing holy water with his family and friends, especially the kind produced in Golden, Colorado and St. Louis, Missouri. He loved a good meal, meat and potatoes, a cheeseburger, anything from DiCicco’s in Sanger, CA, a good fish fry, Cain’s potato chips, Monroe’s Original hot dogs, Vernors, and dessert. His grandkids loved it when Papa would say, “Let’s order a pizza” or “How about some ice cream?” Dad was a good old farm boy. He was raised on a dairy farm where he learned an incredible work ethic and the ability to fix just about anything. Shortly after graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Nadeau in August 1968. Together they enjoyed life’s best times, raising five children: Juliann (Steve) Brant of Littleton, CO; Ryan (Jennifer) Staelgraeve of Ottawa Lake, MI; Rhonda (Terry) Secor of Hollister, CA; Renee (Jorge) Delport of Reedley, CA; and Catherine (James) Tourner of Clovis, CA and spoiling their 12 grandchildren (Tyler, Joe and Geni Brant; Cody and Kara Staelgraeve; Kate Secor; Abby, Pierce and Liv Delport; Trent, Jake and Will Tourner) He taught them many lessons including how to do the right thing, how to be strong, and of course, how to play Euchre, even though he was intimidating and usually won. Dad was a provider and protector. He was employed for many years by Guardian Industries, a career that offered the opportunity to move to California. He was in supervision and enjoyed hiring new employees and opening plants throughout the United States and in Luxembourg and India. After retiring the second time from Guardian in the early 2000’s, Dad took up a new hobby fixing antique engines. He was an active member of the National Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association. He met many friends in “the club” and enjoyed attending and displaying his engines at several shows. After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, dad always kept up a strong exterior to shield us from his challenge. He fought hard and supported his family by attending mass, school functions and sporting events. He was a proud “Papa” and was always quick to give anything he could to help his family. When he entered heaven last Friday, he was greeted by his daughter Therese Michelle and grandchildren Bryan Reed and Rose Elyse Tourner. Dad was never one to miss a good party, so we hope you will join as we celebrate his life on Tuesday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony’s Church pavilion behind St. La Salle School in Reedley.
