John Campbell, superin- tendent for Kings Canyon Unified School District, said it was an honor and privilege for the district to have a sit- ting governor visit campus. He said KCUSD officials learned of Newsom’s plans to visit shortly after 5 p.m. on Feb. 12, and all the logis- tics on the visit quickly came together.
In addition to Campbell, educational officials at Riv- erview School included Jim Yovino, superintendent of schools for Fresno County. He, Campbell, State Sen. Melissa Hurtado of Sanger, select parents and other edu- cation officials were part of a brief round table discussion on the water situation. Dis- cussion took place in front of about 15 to 20 members of the media who covered the proceedings and later questioned Newsom on a variety of topics — includ- ing the recently-scaled back High Speed Rail project in the state.
After the roundtable and press conference concluded, Newsom stepped outside the school library to pose for photos with Campbell, Yo- vino, Hurtado and KCUSD trustees. Trustees in atten- dance were Jim Mulligan, Area 3; Robin Tyler, Area 4; Craig Cooper, Area 6; and Clotilda Mora, Area 7. When that concluded — including brief remarks from Camp- bell and the trustees about the district and the area — Newsom departed by SUV for his next Valley stop. That was a trip back to Fresno to
meet with Valley mayors — including Fresno’s Lee Brand – to discuss their concerns about high speed rail, water storage and other topics of importance in the Valley.
AB73, the other legisla- tion signed by Newsom, pro- vided the remainder of the $131.3 million to fund fire recovery efforts.
On Feb. 14, Newsom vis- ited Butte County — home to last November’s devastating Camp Fire that destroyed much of the city of Para- dise and killed 85 people. The blaze, which burned un- controlled for 17 days and scorched nearly 240 square miles, is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.
