Thefts, high speed chase part of recent rash of crime in Sanger area
By Juanita Adame and Rick Curiel Mid Valley Times
It has been a busy couple of months for the Sanger Police De- partment as reports of drive-by shootings, rob- beries and even a high speed chase, have kept law enforcement per- sonnel working over- time.
It was just after 4:30 p.m. on April 2 when the Fresno County Sheriff’s “Ag Crime Task Force” spotted a stolen vehicle just outside the Sanger city limits.
According to infor- mation from the sher- iff’s office, the driver of the vehicle; a white pickup truck, was sus- pected of stealing the truck from a farm ear- lier in the day.
When units attempt- ed to pull the driver over, he refused to stop and led deputies on a pursuit that entered Sanger’s city limits.
Sanger officers then joined the chase in efforts to stop the driver and his female passenger.

Fresno County Sheriff's Deputies investigate the scene where truck stolen from just outside Sanger crashed into a ditch at East Adams and South Newark avenues follow- ing a high speed chase on April 2. A man and woman from Sanger were arrested.
Hernandez and Carlos Hernandez of Sanger were also arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
A few days before that incident, on March 29, officers responded to another “shots fired” call in the areas of Hume Drive and Ben- net Way.
No one was hit dur- ing that shooting, but neighbors speculated that it was possibly gang related.
During the April 2 Sanger City Council meeting, Interim Police Chief Gerald Galvin was asked about the recent string in gang activity.
“A new young gang has been causing prob- lems in the city,” said Chief Galvin. “We’ve made seven arrests over the last two months, for kidnapping, robbery and shootings.”
Galvin also noted that there have been as many as seven shoot- ings in the past two months within the city.
Anyone with infor- mation on these cases is asked to call the Sanger Police Department at (559) 875-8521.

The department’s he- licopter, “Eagle One,” continued to follow the couple as they made their way into a field outside the city limits.
The vehicle even- tually crashed into a ditch at East Adams and South Newmark.
The couple, now identified as James Gar- cia, 38 of Sanger, and Shelby Dooley, 21, also of Sanger, were arrest- ed following the crash. Each will face multiple charges including auto
theft and evading po- lice.
Two days prior to the chase, a drive by shoot- ing within the city limits left a juvenile male with non life threatening in- juries.
The shooting hap- pened just before 11:30 a.m. on April 1 in the 200 Block of Harri- son Avenue near Third Street.
A 15-year-old male juvenile was booked into the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Cen- ter for attempted homi- cide. Two adults, Joseph
