Reedley College hosts ‘Day of Action’
Staff Report
Students concerned about a loom- ing deadline to decide the fate of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) received assistance from ex- perts on Feb. 21 during a “Day of Action” event at Reedley College.
The program — called “Know Your Rights” (Conozca Sus Derechos) — was sponsored by the Reedley College As- sociated Student Government, student equity and student activities. Officials with Centro La Familia Family Services and other social programs were present to answer questions and provide assis- tance.
On Feb. 26, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up the DACA case for now, saying the program’s legal merits first needed to be heard before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California.
Activities began with a call-a-thon where students and volunteers called Congressional representatives to push for legislation that would protect “Dream- ers” — children brought to the United States with their families as undocument- ed immigrants.
That was followed by an afternoon “Know Your Rights” workshop featur- ing three social representatives — Ariela

had an honor unit of Capt. Victor Perez, Lt. Angel Mon- dragon, Sgt. Marc Rodriguez and Cpl. Adan Zamora raise the American and California flags up the flagpole in front of the police department. The unit then lowered the flags to half-staff, where they were to remain through Thursday, March 1, in accordance with the city proclamation.
The Explorers participa- tion in the ceremony was fit- ting. Bejar began his law en- forcement career as a Reed- ley Police Explorer when he
was 15 years old. Bejar later served in the U.S. Marines Corps before joining the po- lice department.
“He knew the service he wanted to make to his com- munity and country,” Garza said. “He is a true hero. He embodies everything. Patrio- tism, service and honor.”
Ken Baker, a chaplain with the police department, led an opening prayer and a benedic- tion. After the event, a short ceremony was held at the me- morial in Minkler.
This year’s ceremony was held on Feb. 26 because the Feb. 25 anniversary fell on a Sunday.
