ago; McLane High School in Fresno, class of 1968. It really was quite a bit of fun: seeing these “old folks” who I had known many years ago (some since kindergarten!) was rewarding & rich. I don’t know how many times I would look at someone and not recognize them, only to hear their name and the memory slowly come back as to who they were and what our connection had been. How did all those “old people” find their way into that one room?
But here’s the take-away that is still nagging at me: CHERISH THOSE LONG- TERM FRIENDSHIPS. I learned of two classmates who died within about a month of each other eight years ago. One of those guys had been a very good friend of mine in junior high. I’m sure regretting not keeping in touch with him and missing the opportunity to tell him of God’s awesome love.
Then, just this morning I read of another friend—really a long-distance mentor—who is in hospice care right now. I hope I will
many years.
Recalling those friendships with their
missed opportunities and the current one with the hoped-for expression of thanks, brings to mind one other that did come full circle. When I was a senior in high school I broke my wrist playing basketball early on in the season. It was a huge disappointment for me as I had high hopes of a stellar season. One of my teachers would meet me in the gym several days a week and play one-on-one with me so I could work on my opposite hand dribbling and shooting. (I actually broke three
casts from this not-doctor-recommended activity.) This was a teacher that was quite a task-master in the classroom, who took no nonsense but had a firm reputation as the toughest teacher in the school. So, this was totally out of character for him and was a down-to-earth act of kindness and affirmation to a goofy high school kid who was too wrapped up in sports. So, about five years ago when I got his phone number

how much his little kindness had meant to me those many years ago. What a fun conversation that was! To be able to pay it back all these years later felt really good.
Who are those folks for you? Maybe somebody you haven’t seen for years; or a relative that you’ve kinda lost touch with; or a teacher or coach—of yours or of one of your kids; maybe somebody now in a care facility; or...?? Give ‘em a call, write an email, a postcard, a smoke-signal... The regrets are no fun at all—while the expression of thanks or love might even make someone’s day. Friends are a gift of God. Tell ‘em so.

Sentinel staff report
-Joaquin Andres Esquivel, 35, of Visalia was booked on Oct. 9 on suspicion of false imprisonment, a felony, and violating a court order preventing domestic violence and damaging a wireless communication device, both misdemeanors.
According to police, he was contacted in the 1100 block of Villa Avenue where he allegedly forced his way into an apartment belonging to a
person who currently has a court restraining order against him. Once inside the apartment, police say he held the victim down and prevented her from calling the police.

Esquivel had been arrested the previous day after Dinuba Police Officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle in the 1100 block of Villa Avenue. According to police, when contacted on Oct. 9 it was
discovered that he had a local bench warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
He was arrested, booked and later released on cite.
-Danny Lee Turpin, 47, of Dinuba was booked on Oct. 11 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism resulting in property damage, both felonies.
Police say he was parked in a parking lot when he became angry after another car parked next to him. In his anger, police say he opened his car door and
struck the other vehicle with the door and left the scene. According to police, the victim’s father later located him in the area and confronted him about the incident. An altercation began, at which point police say Turpin began to throw rocks at the victim’s father. The damage to the victim’s vehicle was estimated at approximately $1,000.
He was arrested in the 400 block of West El Monte Way, booked and then transported to the Tulare County Jail.

Two local teens arrested in gang attack that left one victim with laceration
Sentinel staff report
Two Dinuba juveniles were arrested last week in connection with an attack that left another juvenile with a laceration to his face and ear.
According to police, the two juveniles were part of a group of friends that attacked two other juveniles. During the attack, police say one of the victims sustained a laceration to
his face and ear that required about seven stiches. The victim was reportedly later threatened by one of the juveniles, telling him he would retaliate if he spoke to the police.
A 15-year old and 16-year old was arrested for the attack and both were charged with assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious bodily injury, preventing or dissuading a victim or witness, and
conspiracy to commit a crime, all felonies. The 15-year old was arrested on Oct. 10 in the 300 block of West Kern Street after being identified in a photo lineup. The 16-year old was arrested on Oct. 11 in the 8400 block of Avenue 406 after also being identified in a
photo lineup.
Both were placed into custody without
incident and later transported to the Tulare County Juvenile Detention Facility.
