Garden Checklist: Mulch can act as insulation
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
When planting, the fall changes your garden. Think about drought tolerant plants. “A garden is a thing of beauty and a job forev- er,” Richard Beiers.
Tasks for this time of year include working in the garden and begin fall cleanup. The cooler weather makes this a perfect time for it.
Despite a few last very hot summer days, fall is rapidly approach- ing with shorter days
and cooler nights. Ad- just irrigation timers as your garden requires less water. When prun- ing, remember to prune and shape photinia now to avoid removing the at- tractive new red foliage.
Photinia can be pruned aggressively if the plant has grown too large. Deadhead and shape rose bushes to promote a final fall bloom. Finish dividing iris. Replant while condi- tions remain warm and dry, and share extra rhi- zomes with friends and neighbors.
When planting, re- member to plant winter and spring annuals and cool-weather vegetables from cell packs. Annu- als, snapdragon, (antir-
rhinum) English daisy, (Bellis perennis) Peren- nials: bellflower (cam- panula) chrysanthemum morifolium. Fruits and vegetables: beets, car- rots, plant from seed. Trees, shrubs, vines: abulia, acacia, horse chestnut, (Aesculus) strawberry tree (Arbu- tusunedo).
Enjoy these now, annuals and perenni- als: alstroemeria, yar- row (Achillea) aster, begonia. Bulbs, corms, tubers: canna. Trees, shrubs, vines: barberry (Beberis) bougainvillea, butterfly bush (Buddleia davidii) Fruits and veg- tables: almonds, beans, corn. Fall color” maple (Acer), cotoneaster.
Things to ponder,
a thick layer of mulch acts as insulation. If ap- plied while the soil is still warm (55 degrees to 65 degrees) it can help extend the fall growing season. In the absence of soaking rains, continue to deep water trees and large shrubs at least once a week.

This is when I began to worry. The road nar- rowed and as beautiful as the scenery was, it didn’t take away from the intense smoke and ash flying everywhere.
I began to help Sgt. Rivera post evacuation notices and document as much as I could. We heard on the radio that all personnel in that ar- ea were ordered to leave immediately.
As of Sept. 8, 12 p.m. the Creek Fire has burned 143,929 acres and remained at 0% contain- ment.
My thoughts are with all those affected by this fire. The residents who have lost their homes, the fire personnel work- ing tirelessly for days to try and maintain control of it.
