Annual Fiesta Run/Walk goes virtual this year
Jon Earnest / Mid Valley Times
Reedley High’s boys basketball team celebrated their championship win at the Sier- ra Pacific Golden Bears Tip Off Classic last December. Like all teams around the state in the 2020-2021 season, the Pirates will open their season in the spring of 2021, specifically March, and play into June because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Registration open through Sept. 27

Reedley’s 12th An- nual Mechanics Bank Fiesta Run/Walk will be a different experience from years past — a vir- tual run with plenty of course and time options.
The event offers 2-mile and 5-mile cours- es in Reedley, Fresno or Clovis or you can choose your own course. Just sign up, run or walk anytime from Oct. 10 to Oct. 31, and submit your time.
Registration is $20 per person and is open through Sunday, Sept. 27. Participants will receive long-sleeve T- shirts, which can be picked up on Friday, Oct.9from4to6p.m. at the Reedley Commu- nity Center. There also is a mailing option. For registration and infor- mation, go to reedley. com and click on “Jump to News & Events.”
The Fiesta event is a
fundraiser for the Reed- ley Parkway.
“What could be bet- ter?” said Stephen Penner, president of the Reedley Parks and Recreation Foundation board. “A leisurely jog on a scenic route of your choosing, at a time that suits your schedule, plus a long-sleeve shirt. And it all benefits a city trea- sure, the Reedley Park- way.”
Race sponsors are Mechanics Bank, Sierra Kings Health Care Dis- trict, Tom and Sherrill Hannon, Reedley Parks and Recreation Foun- dation, Lee’s Service, the Melville family, Ste- phen and Glena Penner, Reedley Lumber, HMC Farms, Carter Vision Care, Lions Club, Kiwan- is Club, Rotary Interna- tional Club and YMCA Board.
While many commu- nities have decided to cancel their fall events because of the CO- VID-19 pandemic, the Greater Reedley Cham- ber of Commerce is dili- gently working to bring the 55th Annual Reed-
ley Fiesta to the people of Reedley in a safe and innovative package on Oct. 9-10. The Fiesta Run/Walk traditionally is held on the Saturday morning of the festival along G Street in down- town Reedley.
Erik Valencia, ex- ecutive director for the Greater Reedley Cham- ber of Commerce, said the Reedley Fiesta Com- mittee has formulated a plan with creative ideas that directly address health and safety con- cerns.
“The Reedley Fiesta is a long-standing tradi- tion and we know it is important to the com- munity that we keep the spirit of the event alive,” Valencia said in an e- mail to The Times.
Valencia said this year’s Fiesta will include many of the events the community has come to love, but they will be presented in what he said was a new and fun way. He said an announcement will be made in the next few days regarding event details.
Prep basketball season will
run from March through June
Reedley High's NYL season starts April 28

Prep basketball teams traditionally have a goal of playing into March. For Reedley High School and all other Cen- tral Section schools, the goal in 2021 is to extend the season nearly into summer.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Interscholastic Federation had to reschedule all prep sports for 2020-21 into winter and spring seasons.
This year, basketball is a spring sport, with the first day of practices scheduled for Monday, March 8 for both boys and girls programs. The season-opening date has been scheduled for Saturday, March
20. As in rescheduled fall sports of vol- leyball and water polo, the North Yosem- ite League has confirmed a revised two- round schedule that begins on Wednes- day, April 28. Boys and girls games will be played at opposite sites; Reedley’s boys travel to Fresno High that date while the Pirate girls host the Warriors.
Varsity start times will be at 6:30 p.m. The RHS boys have league home games with Hoover (Friday, April 30), McLane (Friday, May 7), Roosevelt (Wednesday, May 19), Fresno (Fri- day, May 21) and Sunnyside (Tuesday, May 25). Reedley’s girls’ remaining NYL home schedule is against Roos- evelt (Wednesday, May 5), Sunnyside (Wednesday, May 12), Hoover (Friday, May 14) and McLane (Thursday, May
27).
The Central Section playoffs open
on Tuesday, June 1, for the girls and Wednesday, June 2, for boys. Section finals are scheduled for Friday and Sat- urday, June 11-12.
The season concludes with reduced regional and state playoffs on June 15, 17 and 19.
A total of 14 prep sports will be con- tested in the combined winter-spring season from March into June. That in- cludes perennial winter sports soccer and wrestling. Girls tennis and golf also will compete in the spring season.
