There were six contestants at the First Annual Alta District Historical Society’s Chili Cook- off. And though the choice was difficult, in the end the chili put forward by the Dinuba Fire Fighter’s Association took to honors.
Placing second was the chili of Assistant City Manager Daniel James and third place went to Isaiah Fierro for what he entitled ‘Out of this World Chili’.
Fierro was also voted the People’s Choice Best Chili, voted by the dozens of attendees at Saturday’s event.
This year’s Chili Cook-off was entitled ‘Beans, Brews and Blues’ and also featured craft beer tasting and musical entertainment provided by Rene Emilio Gomez. During the event, Gomez disclosed that his father Luis Gomez was a performer many years ago told stories, sang and did comedy skits with the popular Mexican actor/ comedian known as Cantinflas.
The event was held in the patio of the Alta District Historical Society museum and hopes to be a Memorial Day Weekend tradition in Dinuba. It is put on the by the Alta District Historical Society and the Dinuba Chamber of Commerce.

Jessica Fierro serves up a sample of 'Out of This World Chili' at Saturday's Alta District Historical Society's First Annual Chili Cookoff. The 'Out of This World Chili' booth was just one of six at Saturday's event and, in keeping with the 'Out of This World' theme, was decorated with Star Wars items and those serving were also dressed in Star Wars themed shirts.
The chili, made by Jessica's son Isaiah, earned the People's Choice Award - voted best by those who attended the event. It also received third place in the overall competition, which was judged by local dignitaries.

Farm leader responds to tarrif assistance pacakage

Expressing appreciation for the Trump administration’s broadened programs to ease the impact of retaliatory trade actions on American farmers, the president of the California Farm Bureau Federation reiterated the need to resolve the disputes at the root of the issue.
CFBF President Jamie Johansson was in Washington, D.C., today when the administration announced the tariff-assistance package.
“It’s clear that the administration wants to do what’s best for American farmers and ranchers,” Johansson said, “and we appreciate this second round of assistance for those who have suffered loss of markets and crop value due to retaliatory
tariffs.”
Johansson noted the new
package provides assistance to more California-grown crops not previously included in certain programs, specifically direct assistance through the Market Facilitation Program for walnuts, pistachios, table grapes and potentially others.
“Farm Bureau worked in concert with members of Congress from California, advocating for inclusion of more fruit, nut and other ‘specialty’ crops in the assistance package. Adding those crops will help further buffer rural California from the impact of the trade disputes, and we thank the administration for doing that,” he said.
Johansson noted that farmers are heading into a second straight
harvest season in the middle of a trade war.
“Ultimately, the best assistance for farmers and ranchers would be to resolve the trade disputes and open markets for California farm products,” he said.
Johansson said Congress can also help improve foreign markets for agricultural products.
“The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement will solidify agricultural trade with two of California’s top customers for farm goods,” he said. “The USMCA deserves swift, bipartisanpassage.”
The California Farm Bureau Federation works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of nearly 36,000 members statewide and as part of a nationwide network of nearly 5.6 million Farm Bureau members.
