Pirates' Paz surpasses 1,000 career points

Reedley High's Miah Paz became just the third female basketball player in program history – and second in the past two years — to score 1,000 career points with the Pirates.
The junior wing player reached the milestone on April 24, scoring a 3-pointer during a 26-point performance in a 62-47 loss to the Sierra High Chieftains at RHS gym. She entered the game need- ing 23 points, and reached the plateau late in the game to tie former teammate Madison
Haney. With another season of eligibility, she is on pace to hold the all-time school scor- ing mark.
Paz efforts weren't enough for the Pirates (0-2) to crack the win column, as the visitor used a 21-7 third quarter to take command.
Reedley opened a 10-game NYL season on April 28 at home against Fresno, then play the Warriors in Fresno at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30.
Reedley also has home games scheduled this spring with Hoover (May 7), Roos- evelt (May 12), McLane (May
21) and Sunnyside (May 24).
BASEBALL Sanger opens CMAC play May 4
The Sanger High Apaches open County Metro Athletic Conference Play on Tuesday, May 4, traveling to Madera at 6:30 p.m.in the first of a two- game series. Sanger (8-4) then hosts the Coyotes on Thurs- day, May 6, in a 6:30 p.m. start at SHS varsity diamond.

league matchup on April 27. In their last action, they dropped a 6-3 decision at Fire-
baugh on April 21.
Reedley opened North Yo-
semite League play last week with two wins, edging Fresno 5-4 on the road on April 20 and trouncing Hoover 16-2 on April 22 at Immanuel Sports Com- plex's The Yard.
Immanuel (5-4) won its first two Central Sequoia League games, downing Kingsburg 7-3 on April 20 and going on the road to trounce Exeter 17- 6 on April 23.

The Reedley College baseball Tigers split four Central Valley Conference games last week, leaving Coach Steve Pearce’s squad with a conference record of 5-3 and an overall mark of 7-3 going into this week's action.
The Tigers dropped a 4-3 decision in 11 innings on April 20 to Taft before bounc- ing back for a 13-8 win over the Cougars the next day. On April 23, Reedley split a doubleheader with district rival Fresno City College, dropping the opener 4-2 be- fore dominating the second game 8-0.
Reedley was held to six hits in the opener, two off the bat of Kody Kropf. Four Tiger pitchers combined Tom shut out the Rams in the second game with reliever Eddie Avalos getting credit with the win. Starting pitcher Ryan Friesen worked the first four and a third the third inning for the Tigers.
BJ Vela continued to swing a hot bat with a solo home run for the Tigers while Leo Arrequin, Justin Tiger and AJ Hodgerney finished with two hits.
Reedley finished a two-game series at Merced on April 28 before facing Cerro Coso Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1, in non-league games at Tiger Field. Reedley will be the designated visiting team in the Saturday afternoon game.

Sanger's defense lim- ited an explosive Pan- thers squad to just 248 yards, 184 rushing while limiting C.J. Hall to 103 yards. Arturo Betan- court had 10 tackles, in- cluding two quarterback sacks, while Gabriel Ol- mos (one QB sack) and Nick Wise each added seven tackles.

Privett and Pena led the SHS run game with 63 and 60 yards, and Pena completed 8 of 17 for 105 yards. The senior QB was named Player of the Game by KFRE Channel 59, which televised the game.

A shorthanded Im- manuel High Eagles were unable to keep up with the high-octane Dos Palos High Broncos in a season- ending 47-35 defeat on April 23 at County Line Stadium.
The Eagles (1-1) were without three key play- ers due to injury in senior Winston Williams and ju- niors Jacob Cabrera and Carlos Morales. They then lost quarterback ju- nior quarterback Hector Davila III to a high-ankle sprain for a good portion of the second half.
Davila rushed for 192 yards on 125 carries and two touchdowns, and also completed 6 of 8 for 85 yards and another score. Senior Amren Purewal had a pair of touchdown receptions, one from Da- vila and the other from freshman Jacob Horn. Ju- nior Vincent Vargas also ran for a touchdown.

Reedley finally was able to capitalize on a break – an interception by defensive back Na- thaniel Galaviz — and got on the scoreboard on Rocha's 11-yard touch- down run. A two-point gadget pass from Rios to Joey Ramos made it 15-8 late in the third quarter, giving the home team and fans life.
Sunnyside looked ready to put the game away early in the fourth,
driving down to the Pi- rates' goalline. But the defene stiffened and forced a field goal try, which missed to the right. Two plays later, running back Ryan Warkentin sped 82 yards down the left sideline for an electrifying touch- down. Rocha's PAT kick tied the game with eight minutes left.
The defense stuffed the Wildcats again, and the offense responded with an 86-yard march canoed by Rocha's pass to Rios. The Pirates re-
covered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, and fol- lowing a punt after Sun- nyside burned its time- outs Warkentin made an interception to clinch the victory.
Warkentin rushed for 159 yards – all of the Pirates net total — and added 45 receiving yards. Rocha completed 5 of 10 for 69 yards.

The junior running back/ defensive back rushed for 159 yards on 13 carries — including a game-tying 82-yard touchdown run — and added 45 receiving yards as well as a game-sealing interception return as the Pirates defeated Sunnyside High by a 22-15 score on April 23. The win clinched
an outright North Yosemite League championship, the school’s first outright league title in football since 1972.
