Pirates, Apaches capture league titles
Reedley dominates second half to collect its first outright NYL championship
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
For two-plus quarters, it looked like the Reedley High Pirates' dreams of an outright North Yosemite League football championship were going to be shattered for a second straight sea- son by the Sunnyside High Wildcats.
Trailing 15-0 and plagued by five turnovers, the Pirates were clearly up against it. But led by a spirited de- fense they inexplicably clawed back to tie the game, then got a late touch- down pass from Jacob Rocha with just under three minutes to play. Two more takeaways later, the Pirates savored a 22-15 triumph that gave the program its first outright league championship since 1973.
"We played as bad a first half of- fensively as you could play," said RHS coach Tony Gates. "That's what I told the kids [at halftime], that you couldn't play worse and we're only down two [touchdowns]."

Sanger knocks off defending champs on road to claim CMAC
MVT Staff Report
The Sanger High Apach- es combined a stellar defen- sive effort with a rallying offense last week to de- throne the San Joaquin Me- morial Panthers as County Metro Athletic Conference football champions.
The Apaches (4-1 over- all) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the second in the final minute of play while limiting the two- time champion Panthers to nearly 14 points below their average in a 28-21 triumph in Fresno on April 23. The victory netted Sanger High its 29th league football championship – seventh in CMAC play — and 564th victory in 1,000 games in the program's history dat- ing back 121 years.

Section CIF passes realigment beginning in 2022-23
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
The Central Section Cali- fornia Interscholastic Fed- eration board of managers on April 13 unanimously ap- proved the realignment of the section's athletic leagues for four years, beginning in the 2022-2023 season.
By a 43-0 vote, the section's proposed realignment was ap- proved. In the realignment, Dinuba High School is mov-
ing to a six-school West Yo- semite League from its long- time Central Sequoia League affiliation. The Emperors will be paired with Hanford High and Lemoore High along with Tulare high schools Tulare, Tu- lare Western and Mission Oak.
The approved realignment also moves Reedley High from the North Yosemite League to the new 10-mem- ber Tri County Athletic Con- ference. The Pirates will join former CSL schools Central
Valley Christian, Exeter, Han- ford West, Immanuel, Kings- burg and Selma along with Kerman, Sierra Pacific and Washington Union.
Sanger High remains in an expanded County Metro Ath- letic Conference/NYL. The Apaches join CMAC mem- bers Bullard, Edison, Made- ra, Madera South and San Joaquin Memorial along with NYL schools Fresno, Hoover, McLane, Roosevelt and Sun- nyside and new school Justin
Garza High.
Parlier High and Fowl-
er High move into the new Northwest Sequoia League with Caruthers, Chowchilla, Fresno Christian, Liberty- Madera, Minarets, Riverdale, Sierra and Yosemite. Orosi High and Orange Cove high will be in the revamped East Sequoia League with Corco- ran, Farmersville, Granite Hills, Lindsay, Strathmore, Summit Charter, Wonderful College Prep (Delano) and
Woodlake.
The league realignments
officially take begin in August 2022 with that school year and will run for four years through the 2025-2026 athletic year.
In other CIF business, former Sanger High athletic director and current Clovis High AD Jesse Hardwick was selected by the CIF managers as President-elect through 2023. Hardwick beat out two other candidates in the selec- tion process.
