Sanger's Dixon nets pitching win as
Bulldogs baseball opens 2021 season
MVT Staff Report
Sanger High product Jake Dixon picked up the pitching vic- tory on Feb. 27, as Fresno State's baseball team opened its COVID- delayed 2021 season by winning two of three games against Cal State-Bakersfield over the week- end at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The sophomore right-hander worked six scoreless innings — allowing four hits while striking out four and walking one — as the Bulldogs built a 9-0 lead and then held on for a 9-6 victory. That came on the heels of a 13-2 rout of CSUB on Feb. 26, but the Bulldogs were denied a series sweep when the visitors posted a 9-4 victory on Feb.28.
All four of Dixon's hits allowed were singles, as the 2019 County Metro Athletic Conference play- er of the year at Sanger High

worked with a cushion battling through windy conditions when his teammates erupted for seven runs in the third inning.
"Dixon was fantastic and ev- eryone pitched well. One walk when the conditions are like this, you know there are going to be some balls that go for extra-base hits and the key is that you did not walk guys in front of them," said Fresno State coach Mike Batesole.
During his freshman season in 2020 (one shortened by the pan- demic), Dixon saw action in seven games in relief on the mound. He made one start, and earned a vic- tory against Cal Poly. He struck out eight and walked three in 10.1 innings of work.
Fresno State played a road game at University of San Fran- cisco on March 2 (results were unavailable at press time), then head south for a three-game set at San Diego State on March 6-7. Saturday's doubleheader games will start at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Sunday's game starts at 1 p.m.

MVT Staff Report
The Central Valley continues in a purple (widespread) tier sta- tus for at least another week, but Central Sec- tion programs are con- tinuing to prepare for the possibility of being allowed to practice and eventually platy.
While competition is under way in cross country, golf, swimming/ diving and tennis, more restrictive tiers also has had the door open to practice and play in the near future. Red (substantial) tier sports allowed to practice and play are baseball, soft- ball, field hockey and girls lacrosse.
Even football and wa- ter polo, among orange (moderate) tier sports, are allowed to schedule games and competition regardless of the tier status, provided the ad- justed positive COVID case rate falls below 14 per 100,000. Fresno County reached that mark on March 2.
Sports in the red (sub- stantial) tier that would be allowed to compete are baseball and softball. Football and water polo athletes must conduct CO- VID-19 testing in order to play, according to CDPH youth sports guidelines.
