STARS Continued from B1
“It just shows that in Northern California, they’re No. 1,” Jesus Gallardo said.
Next up for the Stars is the Western World Series in Stockton, featuring more teams from Southern Califor- nia. The series is July 24-27.
“It was a big high for them,” Juan Estrada said. “Something they worked for a long time.”
Torres said she had no se- cret to pitching the winning games. She credited her team- mates and referred to them as “family.” And she said she wasn’t tired after the game. “I could’ve went more,” she said.
Leah had a couple home runs in the tournament. Janiece had one.
Leah said she learned something, too. “That it’s easi- er to play when you have your team with you the whole way,”
she said.
Juan Estrada said emotion
was one of the Stars’ biggest drivers. “It was this tourna- ment that brought them all together,” he said. “In terms of excitement (toward the end), they were all going cra- zy, cheering. They did some amazing plays.”
And he added, “Sure enough, they got it done.”
The team practiced at a ball field on the Washing- ton Academic Middle School grounds last week. They prac- tice at least three days a week.
Jesus Gallardo said it took a few tournaments “to get it together. But I think we found a good groove.”
Other coaches include Miguel Torres and Cesar Du- ron.
