The winning ways continued for the Orosi High girls soccer team as the Lady Cardinal picked up their ninth straight win improving to 15-1-6 and 8-0-1 in West Sequoia League play after defeat- ing Riverdale, 2-0.
Orosi received goals from Amber Apodaca and Melanie Davila.
On Friday night with first place on the line, Orosi knocked off Fowl- er in a 2-0 win. The loss dropped the Lady Red- cats to 16-5-2 and 7-1-1.
“We played really well,” said coach Jesse Camarena. “That was the best first half we’ve played this year.”
Orosi jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Apo- daca scored five minutes into the match. The Lady Cardinals would score
again, but the goal was taken away after an of- ficial called goalie inter- ference. Orosi kept the pressure on outshooting Fowler, 8-2, in the first half.
The Lady Redcats did have a few opportu- nities to break the shut- out missing on a few free kicks and Orosi goalie Mireya Lua preserved the shutout with several saves.
The Lady Cardinals tacked on another goal with 12 minutes left in the match when Melanie Da- vila scored off a rebound.
Camarana said he was pleased with the effort.
“Our defense was re- ally good,” he added.

It’s time again for the “Manning Melee” clash between the Reedley High and Orange Cove High wrestling programs.
The Pirate boys will be looking to avenge their first loss in the 11-year history of the series, when the Titans posted a 36-20 triumph at OCHS gym in 2019. Reedley’s girls will try to continue their per- fect record against Or- ange Cove; last year the Pirates prevailed by a 42- 18 score.
Reedley’s boys are 2-2 against North Yosemite League competition after splitting a pair of double dual matches. The Pirates have scored wins over Roosevelt and Fresno
while losing to Hoover and Sunnyside.
“We’re doing good. We were feeling losses at the beginning of the season, but we’ve come a long way,” said coach A.J. Ro- sas. “We went to Morro Bay last weekend [for the California Invitational Tournament] and Phillip [Arroyo] came in eighth [at 132 pounds]. We had some of our older guys do pretty well as well, they made it to later on in the tournament and almost came close to placing.”
Sophomore Arroyo, who qualified for the sec- tion masters meet and went 23-10 in his first year of high school wres- tling, has a 20-8 mark this year after moving up from the 120 class.
Senior Gabriel Badilla
has posted a 19-12 record in the 162 class. At his most recent competition, he went 2-2 with two pins in the Central Valley In- vitational at Golden West High School on Jan. 25. Other Pirates to post wins at the tourney – although none placed — were Na- thaniel Galaviz (2-2 at 128 pounds), Ethan Anderson (3-2, three pins at 134) and David Nava (2-2, two pins at 184).
“At the beginning of the season we started out a little rough,” Rosas said. “We had about five or six guys who played football and started a little late.”
For Reedley’s girls, the team comes off competi- tion at the Central Valley Showdown in Visalia on Jan. 24. Esther Villa (27- 8 on the season) finished
third at 160 pounds while Mia Garcia (4-7) placed fourth at 235. The team also has competed at the Lady Chukchansi Invita- tional in Madera on Jan. 17 and the Morro Bay Tournament in December as well as tournaments in Lemoore and Santa Paula.
The Pirates will close out the league dual sea- son with Senior Night on Wednesday, Feb. 5, against McLane. Varsity matches for both boys and girls start at 5:30 p.m.
Reedley High will host this year’s North Yosem- ite League champion- ships on Friday, Feb. 7, at RHS gym. Weigh-ins are at 8 a.m., with first matches beginning at 10 a.m. Championship finals should start sometime af- ter 2 p.m.
