Sanger soccer falls to Bullard in déjá vu match
Dinuba High boys' hoops rout Selma
MVT Staff Report
With just three minutes left in regulation, it looked like the Sanger varsity boys soccer team would avenge a 4-3 overtime loss to Bullard on Jan. 7 when an Apache header from close range found the back of the net in their Friday, Jan. 28, match.
The goal seemingly gave Sanger a 2-1 lead as players and fans began to cheer. However, the score was waived off after the Apaches were called off- side and the game subse- quently went into over- time.

Reedley High’s one- two punch of sophomore guard Miah Paz and senior center Madison Haney came up big in the fourth quarter against the Sunnyside High Wildcats, enabling the Pirates to remain in the thick of the North Yosemite League girls championship chase.
Paz scored 10 points and Haney eight points as Reedley surged back from a six-point defi- cit early in the period to pull out a 67-64 victory at RHS gym on Jan. 24. The win kept Reedley (17-5 overall) with Hoover and Roosevelt atop the league entering a Jan. 28 home showdown with the Patri- ots (results were unavail- able at press time).
Paz drained a trio of 3-point shots in the deci- sive surge — the last as- sisted by Haney, who sat out more than a quarter of the game with four fouls — and finished with a game-high 30 points. Haney took over the game in the paint, pow- ering for a pair of inside baskets and sinking four free throws while fin- ishing the night with 18 points.
“She was great to- night,” said RHS coach Matt Wilkinson of Haney. “When we get the ball in to her, whether she scores or not it gives the oppor-
tunity to the other play- ers.”
Reedley trailed 49- 46 entering the fourth, and started the quarter without Haney after she picked up her fourth foul shortly before halftime. The deficit quickly grew to 52-46 when Zamiah Perry drained a 3-point- er from the left wing. Paz began the comeback with a free throw and then nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 52-50. Haney then re-entered the game with about five-and-a-half min- utes left in the game.
The drove inside and drew a shooting foul; ty- ing the game at 52 with a pair of free throws. An- other 3-pointer and a free throw gave Sunnyside (8-10, 2-2) a four-point lead, but Paz scored on a 3-pointer from the right side to cut it to 56-55. Af- ter a steal by Bronagh McGahan, the Pirates re- gained the when Daniela Gomez scored on a layup.
With the score tied at 57, Haney took a feed in- side from Paz and scored to put RHS ahead to stay with under three minutes left. Haney then made two free throws with 2:21 re- maining, and later broke the press to feed Paz for an open 3-pointer to make it 64-59 with 1:40 left. An Abby Delport free throw and Haney basket off the glass made it 67-59 with just 55 seconds to play,
the the Pirates held on. “It was a super excit- ing game tonight,” Wilkin- son said. “It was great to have this environment for our fans. I’m really proud
of our team.”
On Jan. 22, Reedley
trounced McLane by a 59-17 score as Paz scored 22 points and collected four steals. Haney had 19 points and six rebounds while Delport had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and three
steals.
After taking on
Hoover, the Pirates host Roosevelt in a 6:30 p.m. showdown Friday, Jan. 31. They’ll try to avenge a 57- 31 loss to the Rough Rid- ers on Jan. 17 in Fresno.
“Roosevelt is a tough team,” Wilkinson said. “They’ve got a couple of pieces added that really makes them strong. We’re excited to get a chance to play them again at our place.”
Reedley High’s boys basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Jan. 23, picking up their first North Yosem- ite League victory of the season with a 57-51 tri- umph at Sunnyside High in Fresno.
Earlier in the week, the Pirates (13-7, 1-3) lost by a 69-60 score at McLane on Jan. 21, tem- porarily dropping the team into the league base- ment. Reedley, Sunnyside and McLane were tied at for fourth in league at
