What awful news to process throughout the rest of the day. It was a moment that stopped the world in its tracks. An event that shifted our culture and saddened the hearts of many Los Angeles Laker's fans and basketball fans, and just people in general.
Personally, I am not a Laker fan. I grew up in the 1990's when Michael Jordan was by all ac- counts, the best basket- ball player to exist.
There was no second best back then, at least 11-year-old me didn't think so.
I never followed bas- ketball the way I fol- lowed football, but years later I heard about Kobe and the attention he was receiving because of his skill sets on the court.
My thoughts go out to his wife Vanessa, and their other daughters in the wake of this unimagi- nable tragedy.
Two days before the devastating news about Kobe Bryant, and a little closer to home, anoth- er tragedy would also make national news this one involving a single mom who would also not make it home to see her children.
It was late morning on Jan 24 when a wom- an named Yaneth Lopez Valladares was killed in an industrial accident

As I learned the de- tails of this awful trag- edy, I couldn't help but think about the cowork- ers who witnessed the accident. How will they be affected by this trau- matic event, and how would they cope with what they had to witness.
According to help- guide.org, the unsettling thoughts and feelings of traumatic stress—as well as any unpleasant physi- cal symptoms—start to fade as life returns to normal over the days or weeks following a trau- matic event. However, it’s important to remem- ber that people react in different ways to trauma.
The article also states that there is no right or wrong way to respond to trauma because every- one is different.
Ignoring the feelings can slow the recovery process, experts advise for those who have wit- nessed a traumatic event to seek professional help.
Never be afraid to ask for help if you've witnessed an accident or a trauma that the brain might be having trouble processing.
My thoughts also go out to the employees at the Del Rey Packing Company as they begin the healing process of not just losing a friend and coworker but wit- nessing it happen.
