For two of Sanger's favorite Christmas traditions
Toyland Parade
Trek to the Tree

Sanger Herald
Rain caused the tradi- tional tree lighting in Brehler Square to be cancelled a few days earlier.
But the few showers that sprinkled the Toyland Parade on Dec. 1 didn't dampen the enthusiasm of spectators or participants.
Rain or shine it was just a great parade.
Maybe the biggest ever. Maybe the best ever.
It might be difficult to
prove it was the biggest ever because it seems like every year someone at the chamber of commerce makes that claim.
But there's no doubt the kids, and that's what the parade is all about, certainly enjoyed it. That's written on the faces of the youngsters
in the photos above, taken by the Herald's Mike Nemeth. Read Mike's story about
the parade on today's Life- styles page 3B.
You can see almost 200 photos of the parade - and the spectators - on the Sanger Herald's Facebook page.

It's maybe Sanger's most special and certainly its longest running Christmas season tradition, the "Trek to the Tree."
This Sunday, Dec. 9, will mark the 93rd time people from Sanger, and all over the world, have made the trip to the Nation's Christmas Tree in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
The annual event will fea- ture the Sanger High School
choir and NJROTC honor guard, the Jubilation Singers and a non-denominational holiday message Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig.
Shuttle buses to the event will leave from the chamber parking lot for the 2:30 p.m. ceremony at the General Grant Tree, designated as the Nation’s Christmas Tree by President Calvin Coolidge in 1925.
You can reserve a seat on a shuttle bus just to take you
there and back or a bus that makes a stop for a holiday meal at the snow covered Grant Grove Restaurant.
However, only a few bus tickets remain, said chamber president/CEO Tammy Wolfe. Call the chamber at (559) 875-4575 for more informa- tion.
In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared the tree a memorial, calling it a “National Shrine” to the men and women of the Armed

In April 1926, the General Grant tree was dedicated as the Na- tional Christmas Tree. Nearly 30 years later, the General Grant tree was made a national shrine to honor the nation's fallen military. The photo, above, from last year's ceremony shows park rangers placing a memorial wreath at the base of the tree to honor the nation's war dead. This year, Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig, right, will be the featured speaker at the Sunday afternoon event hosted by the City of Sanger.
How much more rain?

California Chief Supreme Court Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye who administered the oath of office on Monday is flanked by Sanger High graduates Jim Nielsen, left, and Melissa Hurtado. State senator Nielsen, 74, represents the 4th California senate district and Hurtado, 30, the youngest ever female state senator represents the 14th state senate district. The Sanger city council will try to decide this evening whether to replace Hurtado on the council by appointment or special election.
