With spring only 12 days away we are going to get some rain. Seems like that always happens at the begin- ning of youth baseball and softball seasons. Daytime temperatures will range from the 50s to the 70s and nights will be warmer than they have been, with tem- peratures in the high 40s and low 50s.

A group of Sanger High School stu- dents are planning to make a "political statement" by standing up from their desks next Wednesday morning at ex- actly 10 a.m. and walking out of their classrooms.
They intend to remain on campus, not far from the main office for 17 minutes while the names of the 17 Parkland, Fla. shooting victims are read. "Then we'll go back to class," said senior Grace Miller who identified herself as chairperson of the event.
"The purpose of the walkout is to send a message to legislators that we need stricter gun rules and better mental health services. We also want to discour- age congressman David Valadao from taking money from the NRA (National Rifle Association)," said Miller.
"Sometimes in order to get a political message across you have to be disrup- tive."
The Sanger walkout is part of a na- tional event called for by Women’s March Youth Empower "to protest Congress’ re- fusal to take action on the gun violence epidemic plaguing our schools and neigh- borhoods."
A Women's March Youth Empower website provides instructions for orga- nizing the walkouts.
Miller said there are about 30 students involved in planning the Sanger walkout and she expects more than 100, repre- senting a cross section of Sanger High's diverse student population, to be part of the event.
"We want to send a message that our voices matter, that we can bring about change," said Miller.
"We hope parents, teachers and ad- ministrators will support our movement. Even if they disagree with us, we hope they will support our First Amendment rights."
This may not be the only protest this group is involved in.
"We plan to keep in touch and we might
get together again in the future to protest social injustice," said Miller.
High school principal Dan Chacon has decided to give all students a 17 minute break, starting at 10 a.m. next Wednes- day.
"The students can decide whether they want to use the time to join the demon- strators, go to the cafeteria for snacks or just hang out in the gym," said schools superintendent Matt Navo.
"That way no one's First Amendment rights will be infringed and there's really no issue with the walkout because every- one will be on break."
Miller told the Herald she hopes to become a politician or maybe work for a socially involved nonprofit.
Elsie Amador, who accompanied Mill- er to the Herald office, said she wants to become a pediatric surgeon and practice in Sanger, helping low income minori- ties.
