Delbert Fraser
March 25, 1926 - November 25, 2018
On November 25, 2018, my dad, Delbert Fraser, went to be with his Lord in Heaven, at the age
of 92. He was known
to many as Gabby for much of his life. He was born on March 25, 1926 in Dinuba, California
to Warren J. and Mabel Dewhirst Fraser, and was the youngest of three sons. He grew up on a ranch east of Dinu- ba and graduated from Dinuba High School. My dad was an avid car bu , auto mechanic, and motorcycle enthusiast. He also liked to draw, which inspired me in
my early art years, and loved to sing along with his old favorites on a record album or on the radio. roughout high school and into his married life, my dad was o en pictured in one of his beloved cars or on a motorcycle. My dad shared his love of cars and motorcycles with me as I grew up driving go-carts and rid- ing homemade mini-bikes as well as motorcycles, in addition to learning to drive in our purple dune buggy.
In 1944, my dad enlisted in the Navy, with his best friend Verne Miller, to ght in World War II. He received his basic training at Farragut, Idaho and was deployed to the Asiatic Pa- ci c, speci cally Guam and Okinawa, aboard the USS Navarro. He was honorably discharged from the Navy a er two years of active service. It was a er his return from the Navy to Dinuba that he met my mom, Veda Neilson, and the two began their relationship. ey were then married on July 9, 1949, in the Di- nuba Presbyterian Church. A er almost ten years of marriage, Shirley was born and the family moved from their house on Tulare Street in Dinuba into a brand new, contemporary home near Lincoln School and down the street from the Alta District Hospital, where she had been born.
My parents loved antiques and spent a lot of time in their early years together collecting various items such as colored glass- ware, crystal, Native American baskets, and ice cream chairs and tables from past businesses. ey could o en be found outside of the Fresno city limits at the Cherry Auction and various other antique connections. ey instilled an appreciation of the past and its collectibles within me. My dad also enjoyed landscaping the yard of their new home, and grew sago and fan palms which were used within the yard.
My dad had a long career a er he returned from the Navy and WWII. He had worked as a mechanic for Floyd Perry in Dinuba and had a brief time in construction but his main employer would be PG&E. He set a record for longevity in Fresno at that time and was employed by the company for 48 years when he retired. I remember that they only had employee gi s for up
to 45 years so they let him pick an additional one for his long service. He began in Dinuba as a meter reader, driving all over the area including the foothills. He then accepted a transfer in nearby Fresno, as my parents didn’t want to leave the area, and became the head of the meter reading department in the old San Joaquin Power building on Fulton Street. His o ce was on the third oor of the building and I remember thinking what a great view he had from there, as there weren’t many tall build- ings in Dinuba. He retired as an investigator for high gas and electric usage from the new and current PG&E o ce on P Street in Fresno.
A er retiring, my parents enjoyed traveling and cruises with their dear, life-long friends Rae and Barney Porton. My parents enjoyed traveling and I visited numerous places throughout the United States during the summers as a child. We also enjoyed traveling to Europe as a family in 1988 to see countries of their family heritage. We went to Inverness Scotland, where the Fra- ser Clan still resides in a castle, and onto Germany to celebrate my mom’s family heritage. A highlight for my parents was traveling to New York in 1996 to hear me perform on clarinet
at Carnegie Hall with the Fresno State Wind Ensemble. Other very memorable events included the four anniversary parties
I gave my parents for their 40th, 45th, 50th, and 60th wedding anniversaries. And they were all 100 plus degree days in July just as their wedding day had been in 1949. ose were some of the best times, spending time with loved ones and creating memo- ries that would be talked about for years to come! For many of the past twenty years, I was blessed to have my parents join me at my home in Morro Bay, where they loved the cool weather during the hot summers in the valley.
My dad is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Veda, just last year, and his parents, Warren in 1939 and Mabel in 1976, as well as his two brothers, Gerald in 1972 and Harold in 1997. He is survived by their only child, daughter Shirley, and two neph- ews, Jim Fraser of Hanford, and Jack Fraser of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and their families, in addition to several extended family members.
My parents outlived most of their friends and family. I was very blessed to have them for as long as I did, and they will live on in my heart forever.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba. Immediately following the graveside service, a time of sharing and luncheon reception will be held at the Dinuba Christian Church at 355 E. Saginaw Ave. Remembrances can
be made to the Dinuba Christian Church.
